Just had the Mopar (Corsa) Catback installed a few weeks ago. The heat shield that sits above the right exhaust keeps falling off. This is the 2nd time now. Had brought it back to the dealer after the first time who put it back on. Now a week later it is off again. Anyone else have had the problem? Is the heat shield needed or should I just keep it off. Am not sure if it was there stock or if it came with the exhaust. Scott, since you have the same setup: would you mind checking under your car and see if you (still) have a heat shield over the right hand exhaust. The shield sits kind of to the left of the exhaust. Am wondering if it is ok to just keep it off or should I go back to the dealer? Here are some pics:
Hey bro, just checked mine (my car is tooooo low, that was a pain, lol!). Mine's still there. Funny how there's one on pass side and not on the driver's side. Wonder if you actually need it and why it's only on that side??? Battery maybe? Ask Quick (Dave), he's the resident brain, he'll know. He should pipe in.
Thanks Scott! Is this one maybe closer to the gas tank? Or as you said, closer to the battery? Dave, what's your thought? Should I have it put back on? Maybe they need to order a new one. Last time I think they used the same old one again. Wondering if it is on the stock cars, too, or just comes with the Mopar exhaus (which seems bigger).
I'm wondering why it keeps coming off. Mine seems to be glued on like dyno mat or some other sound deading material is, makes it hard to come off. Is your exhaust hitting it or rubbing on it? If that's the case then yea I'd go back to the Hartzheim and make them put it back on and straighten the exhaust so it doesn't hit it.
Yea, mine too, both sides are really close to the car but I'm not rubbing on either side, at least I don't see any marks. Right side must have that shield for the battery, I guess, IDK. And I don't think that came with the Mopar/Corsa exhaust either, at least I don't remember seeing it in the box, I think it was on the car from the factory.
And the funny thing, I haven't driven it since Saturday. Just noticed when I opened the garage. Last time part of it was still sticking, but most of it hanging down. This time it was laying on the floor. As if the glue is just not sticking. But as you said, maybe it is rubbing against it...
Me? I've never looked at the heat shields in the back. Tips are perfectly placed and symetrical from right to left side. Same for the resonators. Why would I inspect the heatshields? They've got some on both sides up front I've looked at. I'll have to look at it tomorrow (it's dark now). In general I'd say heat shields are a good thing. Especially when placed over exhausts. If you had your cat back installed at Hartzeim's they warranty it for 3/36. Take it back.
Ok, I couldn't wait. I got a flashlight and went out there and looked. I got a heat shield. 1 of them. On the right side. I don't have one on the left side but it sort of looks like there might have been one there before. There's some blue(?) stuff sort of outlining where it would be if it was a mirror to the one on the right side. If there's supposed to be 2 of them them and they don't have a bunch in stock tell them to order a left side for me (looks like they'd be exactly the same) 'cause I'll be coming down there too. The one on the right seems to be firmly glued to the side. It's pulled loose after it's wrapped around to the bottom. That edge is still wrapped around ok but it's not stuck on. On the right side there's maybe 1/8" clearance at most right at the rear of the resonator. As you move forward on the resonator it gets further away.
Thanks, Dave! I don't have one on the left either... Don't know if it ever was there. But I feel like the right resonator is closer to the underbody than the left one. I think Scott only has one on the right side, too. I will give Hartzheim a call tomorrow...
Scott might be right on the location. That is right where the battery sits. I wouldn't worry about anything getting burned but excessive heat is not conducive to long battery life. Don't the single exhaust cars only have the pipe on the right side? I think I'll try to take pics! check back in about 1/2 hour. If it's supposed to have 2 and one's fallen off this could really hurt my resale value at BJ's in about 20 years...
I got pics... sort of. This is the right side straight on from the rear. You can see where the heat shield makes the bend it isn't glued very well underneath (if at all). Looks a little worse here because of that rib in the bottom of the pan. This the the right side looking straight up. Here's the left side mainly from the rear. See the blue? Here's the left side mainly looking straight up. I wonder if the blue stuff was sort of prep for sticking on the heat shield? Kind of like that purple stuff for pvc pipe.
Thanks Dave! Mine looks similiar: there seems to be more space on the left where on the right hand it was touching the heat shield. Will see if I can get information out of Hartzheim if it is supposed to be on both side...
Yea, there is a good bit more space on the left (and no battery over there). It doesn't really look like anything was ever glued on the left side either. Unless it came off cleanly. Mine doesn't actually touch on the right but it looks to be about 1/16" clearance at best so it probably does when moving.... HEH, you know what? Maybe it's there for sound deadening! That would make one hell of a racket with that resonator rattling up against that metal floor pan. We'll see what you find out.
Sorry Dave, I thought I remembered you talking about your heat shield before. Must have been someone else, sorry. BUT you do seem to know something about EVERYTHING so it wasn't a total loss suggesting you, hahahaha! And for the record mine is just as close as yours in those pix, there's hardly no space there, maybe 1/16. But I don't see any rubbing marks so I guess I'm good.
