2006 300c SRT8 I recieved my EBC Yellow Stuff pads yesterday and thought it would be a nice hour project to change them today before I went into work. Not so much! :SM002: I started on the right front and noticed that the dust boots did not go back into the caliper like they should. I got to poking around and noticed that thier appeared to be plating coming off the pistons and a lot off corrosion. Here is what I found: This is not the worst one, it is typical of the four. I have not torn into the other corners yet but I assume they will be the same... at least on the front. I am posting this up prior to researching options on getting this fixed. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate it. Please don't tell me to take it to the dealer as that is not an option. I am hoping that I can get pistons, seals and dust boots for a reasonable amount from somewhere. I will also flush the system as some of the plating or corrosion may have contaminated it. Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome?
Holy CRAP! If talking to the dealer is not an option (not sure why not?), then I would suggest calling Brembo directly. It is their stuff! Good luck and godd thing you caught it now.
It's off warranty and I would rather fix it myself. It is daily driven all winter long in MI. I have never had good luck with nickel plated aluminum. Maybe it's my negative attitude.
lol not the attitude man. However, that type of corrosion should NOT be happening, ever. Maybe calling the Chrysler Customer Support line and explain the situation. Sometimes they come through with flying colors. Hell, can't hurt. IF they say "Can't help", you are no further than you are now. hehe Good luck and keep us informed on the resolution.
Good luck with Bembo too. It was explained to me when I called Brembo that although these calipers were manufactured by Brembo, they were designed by Chrysler engineers. I was told by Brembo that they stock no parts for these calipers at all. I found this hard to believe but I could not get the part I was looking for. Even the simplest thing like the bridge pipe on the rear calipers cannot be found anywhere. Talked to the dealer and Chrysler about it and their only option was to buy a complete new caliper (screw that after I saw the price). I had to have a shop bend brake line to make me a new bridge pipe and I fabricated the rubber bumper part of it myself.
I just changed out the rears. They showed none of the corrosion or flaking of plating. The pistons are of the cup disign not solid. Not sure if they are oven of the same material.
Just got off the phone with sales at Zeckhausen. No go on the pistons there. They put me in touch with Brake Warehouse. They have reconned front calipers for $150 each. Pistons and seals come to damn near that. They are going to call me back as soon as they check to see if they have the silver ones. Both DZ and Brake Warehouse are super cool and easy to deal with.
Wow skel, I have never seen pistons that bad on any brakes I have ever rebuilt...ever. Someone was selling their Brembos somewhere but I'll have to look where and if they are sold... How does the inside surface of the caliper look? This guy had some silver ones for sale a few days ago: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-0...012QQitemZ220250140817QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
skel - wow, i am pretty shocked to see the poor state of the piston on your brakes!!! i understand you drive it full time, weather and all, but i have not seen that bad of degredation on a brake piston before, at least not one relatively new and lower miles. at least it is good to hear you are getting some potential help for the brake warehouse!
The seals were still in good shape and they had not been leaking so the caliper bodies themselves appear fine. The driver side was not as bad as the passenger side but still were not servicable IMO. When I pushed the pistons in I could feel increased and inconsistant resistance prior to them bottoming out. I already removed them from the car so I'm not going to bother pulling it apart. They are just going in a box and turned on for core. I assume that the passenger side took the brunt of the salt from being on the shoulder side of the road. I am getting two reconditioned calipers shipped from Brake Warehouse for 120 each. They are unpainted. The only painted ones they had in stock were black with no Brembo logo. If this happens again in two years I am going to look into getting some custom one off pistons made from stainless. Being that the caliper body is steel this should work OK and I know a couple of guys that work at a tool and die shop.
sorry you had to go through that but glad you found a reasonable resolution. still sucks though that you have to get a whole new caliper just for a frickin piston.
Tony, Good to see you here at the Connection, it's a smart group here. Good luck with the brakes man. Eric
So... When I go to paint these things where do I find a brembo stencil or decals? I want them to appear stock.
hahahahahahahahahaha your a funny guy thinking you can dumb it down anymore!!! hahahahahaha :bigwink:....welcome aboard.... this is something that im sure others will run into (especially with some of the jeep owners who live up north and drive their rigs all year). Sorry you had to be the one to run into this issue but hopefully you will help some of the other boys and girls on here get a jump on a possible future issue
