Folks, the link below starts out announcing a sale on 0W-40, then someone states that Mobil changed the protective properties of this oil, which no longer meets recommended specs! this is old news. this debate has been going on forever. if you're running big power you shouldn't be running a 0w40 anyway. 20w50 is a better choice, and in all reality for most daily drivers a 5w30 or 10w30 is just fine. for people who care AMSOIL seems to be the overall winner in the oil battle, it's just a pain in the ass to get so most people stick with royal purple. but if you're doing oil changes regularly in the end it doesn't make a huge difference anyway.
Wow, that's a great heads up Jason, thanks. Actually I was gonna go to 5-40 or even 15-50 and it looks like the Mobil 5-40 is still ok, did I read that right?? What about other brands, what else is good? Castrol? Penziol?
I'm using Royal Purple XLR. Good stuff. I use Mobil 1 from the dealer otherwise but I get my oil changed every 3mths regardless.
You know buddy full synthetic oil won't break down over time like conventional oil so unless you're driving a whole lot of miles you really don't need to change it that often ... not that there's anything wrong with that tho, lol!! Pamper, pamper, pamper!!
I put Amsoil 5w30 in my 426 after my 1500 mile drive from Kentucky. I think it got a semi-synthetic 5w30 when the engine was put in.
FYI: "Fully Synthetic" oil is NOT 100% synthetic! To claim "fully synthetic", the mfg need only to meet a certain percentage (forgot what exactly) to be considered fully synthetic... this info came from a company in the motor oil business and former vendor.
I don't claim to be an expert on much of anything and only go by my experiences on things I've seen or done and with that being said in the 20 years I've had my Mustang and all the mods and parts and tweaking I've done to it over that time I've seen quite a lot. Fully synthetic or not IDK, all I know is that synthetic oil won't break down over time like regular oil, or I should say will last longer. I tested this (rather unscientifically too, lol) many, many years ago cause I was curious. I took a qt. of regular oil and a qt. of syn and poured them out into bowls and let them sit for 3 months (or was it 6, can't remember exactly). Anyway, the syn still looked new while the regular had already turned and I'm assuming that meant it was breaking down and going bad since that's what old used oil looks like coming out of my car. Maybe I assumed wrong but there was no way I'd put that in my motor where the syn I would. That's what I was talking about. Also I know syn has better heat resistence and will stick to interior parts for better protection than regular oil. Does anyone know why Chry requires it for our motors????
All synthetics are not equal. Most on the market are group 3 which is a petroleum that is altered. However AMSOIL's European Formula 5W-40 is a group 4 PAO(pure synthetic) and meets the specifications for our 6.1L Hemi's. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx

Oh you're right, but I have to use them up in 5 years, since I got the service warranty thingie and then they deducted the price of all the tire rotations from that so it worked out to be a smokin deal.
Momo, I know you haven't had much to panic about lately (hang in there, the blower will open up untold mysteries to fret over:unsure. Just do this each time you change your oil and no worries. (anyone have stats to compare the volume of past CAI discussions with past oil discussions?)

It's like less than 2 double lattes? and they send you the little sample bottles and mailers and everything... Hang on, I'm going to see what I paid (right back with the edit) Looks like I paid $102 for SIX? 'cause I think you get one free with 5 if you prepurchase them or something like that. For a whopping $25 you can get an oil pump with tube so you can suck it out of the oil stick tube if you don't change your own or want to ask the people that do to collect a sample. Oops, my bad. Looks like they've raised their prices. A six or more now costs $19 per sample instead of $17.
