steve - this story is strangely familair to a time when i sold a gsxr 750 to a kid when i was still i cali........ i wrecked the bike on the freeways of oakland, rebuild it even nicer that before, and decide to sell it cuz' i just bought the harley and was redoing that. my gsxr was fast and super trick looking. kid comes over to look at it and say "yeah, i'll take it".....he acted like he had been around bikes for years. talked a good game and all....... the next day he comes to pick it up, money is exchanged, he gets the keys and goes down to the bike....... first issue, the guy was like 5 foot tall. almost as short a momo. could not put his feet on the ground. looked a little clumsy to say the least... he then puts in the key and asked why it won't start. "ummmmm, you have to pull in the clutch if it is not in neutral"...... this is when i started getting a bit uneasy....

    he starts it up
revs it a bunch of times
    puts it in gear
    kills it....
    again
    and again,
    and again....
i finally ask if he has been on a bike......

"no, but i play roadrash all the time on my playstation, and have a buddy who TOLD me how to do it....how hard can it be?".......

i then proceeded to feel horrible and like i just signed the kids death sentence....

he wrecked the bike in one day, put him self in the hospital for a month.........

hey steve......this is all true by the way and in no way a means to discourage you from bike ownership!!!! lol

    He probably thought he could...

I'm with Tammy, I could have fun in a Viper doing 70mph in 2nd gear with an instructor next to me... but I would probably kill myself (or more likely just crash the car) if I were to go out on my own driving around town.

    --Russ

PS. To help with my nervousness with driving a stick I have attempted to practice more with every opportunity... so when a friend bought a Mustang GT in Miami, I volunteered to drive it to Houston for him... no change in driving whatsoever for me... all I did was use the 5th gear! Similarly when I went to Aruba I rented a manual Toyota Yaris, and other than stalling the damn thing all the time, I haven't learned anything useful.

Well, he did. He managed to get out and back with the salesman who was showing him how to drive a stick...

Somebody here was going to check with a large Viper dealership friend to verify the statistic on how many get wrecked on the way home from the dealership. Never got back to us?

probably would be pretty cheap as a beater too!

I "learned" how to drive on my friend's 1984 VW Jetta TDI... his father bought him a Corvette for graduation and a beater to learn how to drive stick.

I think the more you drive it the more confidence you get... the key is to drive it often to gain experience but more importantly to gain confidence not to freeze not knowing which pedal to push.

My stepdad attempted to teach me how to drive stick in a '74 Ford Supercab long bed. It was all good until the stop-start on a hill part. Stupid clutch was like two feet off the floor and the shift point/sweet spot was somewhere in the middle for all of half an inch. Something else came up and they said to hell with it and put me in a Toyota Tercel automatic.

I did grow up riding around with my mom driving a Datsun 210 stickshift, so I'm familiar with how its supposed to sound and knew when to brace for a change in acceleration. To this day I think my road course enthusiasm started with her.
