So I have an HP Pavilion ZD8000 laptop that started getting lines in the screen then eventually the HDD died. I bought a new laptop and put the old in the closet. My wife has started barking about having her own laptop so I decided to buy a new LCD and HDD for the pavilion to save having to pay the $500+ on a new laptop. I installed the new HDD and put the XP system disc in and changed the boot order to cdrom first. I first got the infamous PXE-E61 boot error, I went back and disabled the network boot device and now it will not boot anything and just goes to a black screen. The disc drive never had any issues before it was stored away and the light on the drive blinks at start up but the cpu will not boot from the drive. I'm contemplating taking the disc drive out of this unit and putting it in the HP just to see if it's the drive but I was wondering if anyone knew of what else the issue may be? Help
Is the disc a DVD or CD? Could be a compatibility issue that way... Otherwise, I would start by re-seating the CD drive. Just remove it, power up the machine (As far as it will power up) then shut it down, and replace the drive. Then, make sure that the boot order is still CD first, and try again.
Sounds like the I/O, if so these days it's integral to the motherbd and probably cost more to replace that then getting a new computer. Similar thing happened to a Gateway I used to have. Ended up using it for a boat anchor.
i would pull the hdd and the cdrom then try to boot the machine. if that doesnt work, i would look up how to reset the bios on the laptop.
Basic I/O or Input/Output. Takes info from things like HDD, CD, Keyboard etc.... and depending on the input processes them to the perspective outputs like the monitor. Kind of like your HDD is giving the info to boot up to the motherbd and the motherbd is going huh?? No comprende, Wakarimasen.
dude, the hdd has nothing to do with the mobo coming up. it only kicks in when the mobo finishes its post and then looks for bootable media.
Thanks guys, I switched the disc drive and it is now booting and installing windows......ehhhh so much for saving money though....$200 for the LCD, $100 for the HDD, and ~75(?) for the disc drive. I can get a brand new Acer for >$500, Oh well. Then again this HP is loaded and the Acer would be very basic.
