So one of my buddies is a old school type of guy. His old. lol Naw but his a big gear head and has many old muscle cars and what not. Very good mechanic. I've told him there are no spirngs and or other types of mods for us Jeep owners to lower them. He told me what he has done to lower cars. At least 15 cars he has done this too. H Heat(Im assuming with a blow torch) the coil/spring up; add weigt to the top of it so it copresses and make the spring lower. Has anyone done this? Would this work on our Jeeps? Or should I just wait it out to see if Eibach comes out with springs? My buddy says with how many his done it would be pretty easy to do.
please don't go ricer on your car. that's something that idiot honda fanboys do to be cheap. it completly ruins the ride quality and comprimises the integrity of the spring. just get co's if availible, they're about 38953x better than springs anyway.
You'd have to be pretty good with a torch to get the spring rate/height equal on all the springs. Go for it. If it works, the guy will probably have a line of Jeeps waiting to be slammed.
Yea, I am old school as well, but I would NEVER heat the coils to lower the car. Why? Because you will lose the integrity of the springs. Once they have been heated, they stand a VERY good chance of cracking, breaking, or giving out. Also, the ride will be extremely bumpy... My suggestion would be to contact the likes of Pedders, KW, or even Eibach and see if they will be coming out with something and when. Maybe even convince one of them to sponsor your rig as the Guinea Pig?
That trick has been around forever. Would I do it to a 50k jeep....no way. I'll put it up with it like it is until a good set of springs or coilovers that are engineered for the jeep are released. If you wanna try it then go ahead but it IS going to ride bad.
That would be awsome. Not going ot happend while I'm stationed in Alaska tho. I'll give all those guys a call and find out the. Never hurts to ask. KWs would be sick. I could still try and do the heating the springs tho. Anyone know how much stock springs cost?lol
Eibach supposedly has lowering springs in uhhh "TESTING" right now for us but they sure have been testing for a long time
Sometimes there is a reason why something is called old school. Heating springs was bad in the 50s and 2008 is no different. It would be one thing to build a lead sled or low rider to cruise and look cool, but what exactly are we doing with our SRTs? So if we are making them drive faster and stop shorter, should we compromise safety, cornering, drivability, ..... I could go on. It was a bad idea for me when I was sportin' a 92 chevy with full bell tech suspension and I would shoot anyone coming close to my charger.
DO IT not with a torxh tho... whats the worst that could happen? You will have to buy new springs big deal? DOOOOOOOOO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
How much are springs tho? I wouldnt mind trying this out but it I dont like it and the Springs are fucked I want to replace them ASAP.
Well I'm amazed that he has lived to be an old timer. Spring steel is tempered so that if can withstand the stress of constant flexing. If it was a standard steel it would fatigue in no time and fail. When you heat it, you change the temper of the spring. Now it's subject to fatigue stress, and it's only a matter of time until it fails. It's a matter of strength of materials and their properties, and nothing anyone says can change that.
Here's another bad idea ... just cut your springs, better (slightly) than heating them ... and I'd def get a new set of springs to put back on when you realize this was a bad idea, lol! Come on KW, Eibach!! I'd wait bro.
