so am i correct in making the assumption that the system would be set up similar to a nitrous set up, in that you would have a remote mounted "bottle", lines running to the tb, switches to engage it, etc???? seems like it could be costly to run all the time, so am i again, safe to assume this is something, again, like nitrous, that would be used in specific circumstances, ie drags, etc.????? would be cool to run a system like this all the time in the summer!!!!
Well, once again I can only speak from Viper experience but it is incredibly low tech rather than complicated. The reservoir for the water/meth mixture is the windshield washer fluid container...the mixture most of us use in -30 degree windshield washer fluid that you can buy at NAPA or AutoZone for $1.99 a gallon (40% methanol). We add a pump that is activated by our VEC III piggyback electronic assistant...the injection is accomplished with a small hose that is attached at the front of the air filter... Sorry to disappoint you if you thought this was high tech...it is not rocket science, just a little shade tree engineering, with some pretty ingenious thought behind it. Credit Sean Roe, of Roe Racing. In the picture below you will see the insertion point at the front of the air cleaner. The hose runs directly to a small pump that is plumbed to a hose that goes to a hole drilled in the top of the windshield wiper fluid container. This does not effect your ability to use the windshield wipers...most of us with black trucks don't do that...or even drive when use of the wipers would be required... In this picture you can see the container with the tube running out of the top to the pump. And the usage in my experience: One Half Gallon for a day at the track...five or six runs. One Gallon in a month of normal driving...with occasional sprints from stop lights and a few bursts for ego purposes on highways...
On both of meth injected turbo vehicles I have the line was plumed into the the hard pipe before the Throttle Body. Now granted my engines are only a 2.5 L four cylinder and that is 153 cubic inches. The motor in the Mini Van I would guess makes close to 350 fwhp. I plan on getting it back on the dyno to get real numbers in May. Chuck PS---Chance from DevilsOwnInjection will be at the Event in Columbus and you could talk to him in person if you are going to attend.
this is actually all that meth injection is supposed to do. it's not designed as a power adder, the power you get from it is a by product not the goal. the purpose of using it is to reduce detonation and as such increase timing. this allows the car to run more efficently and with lower overall egt's. that's how you get power. this works on both n/a and f/i applications. i have it on my neon, been running it for about three years now with no problems. i'm going to throw it on my tj soon too actually, as another beneficial byproduct of using it is that it basically steam-cleans the motor. with the 4.0HO being so prone to carbon build up it will really help with longevity (not that the motor needs it, damn thing will go like 300k!).
I would just like to say thanks for all the info.Kris,Is it really ness for all that electronic crap I see you have listed with the Meth kits?? I really only plan on using it at the strip..I would also like to mention I think this is the longest on TOPIC thread I have around here in a long timeleasantry:
What electronic crap? LOL If you mean the gauges etc, for a N/A motor like ours they are not necessary, however if you are running it on boost or as a primary intercooler method than the gauges and monitors are very valuable. For a basic kit you would need: Injection System - Which includes the pump, tank, lines, nozzles, solenoid etc http://www.bmcspeedshop.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ISG-10 The other key part is the cotroller, which will tell when to send the water/meth...ex WOT. http://www.bmcspeedshop.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VC-A10
With my original GS S/C setup the intake temps were high (very, very inefficient intercooler) and after a day of dyno tuning we were getting 462RWHP. Please note that GS removes the AIT from the intake tube so the car has no idea what the intake temp is doing so intake temp timing retard is not a factor in the setup of my car. We turned on Meth (100% mix) and next run was 511 RWHP. Assuming that Meth is not a power adder that is a huge amount of power left on the table through knock retard (93 Oct gas) that the Meth was able to compensate for. New setup with a huge air to air intercooler (intake manifold temp stayed below 100deg after 5 hrs on the dyno) the methanol set at the same spot as previous setup actually hurt HP. We had to reduce the jet size and only turn on at the very highest boost to keep air fuel ratios flat. Basically anyone running in high temp areas and have heat soak issues should actually see and feel a gain from meth, others in cold climates and not running boost may not see much of an improvement
Can anyone tell me if and how it would benifit this with my N20??.Again great info here. Thanks again..
As strange as this may sound that is the setup Labonte Recommends for our cars. Since we dont run a MAF, the MAF setup controller would not work, and the boost controllers are S/C and Turbo cars. The carb controller works for anyone that isn't running boost or isn't on a MAF system.
Wow, very interested in seeing more results for this. Seems like a very reliable and cost efficient mod now that tuning is available.
