I've heard other people mention this before but I don't think I ever got a straight answer. It only does it in cold weather but when I'm backing out and the wheels are turned just about all the way to the left or the right I get this thumping noise. Only does it when its cold out. Anybody have any idea's? Thanks in advance.

    I have no idea Mark...

You might want to have the Dealer take a look on a cold morning.

I'll have to take it to my friend so nobody can see the dead warranty I keep under my hood.

Is the noise at a regular interval? Say, on one revolution of the wheels.

Does the noise originate from the rear of the car?

    Which side of the car?

    Does it sound metallic?

When does it start and when does it go away?

Nope this is normal. There is a big thread on this somewhere at the OC. My car does it all the time when I reverse and its really cold out. I usually back into all my spots now and try not to turn the wheel too much. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the tires. Erik (Hemi31) knows as I remember him involved in the thread. Nothing to really worry about Marc.

Someone said it was the F1's doing something in the cold...which I found hard to believe..Erik may not know actually...now that I think about it...he was running the RSA's and I don't think it affected them.

My uncle always nagged me for parking with my wheels turned, he said radials would get a flat spot "the tire would form a flat spot" on the edge of the tire, I asked if it would stay that way he said "no after warming the tires up driveing they go back to normal" but untill then they'd be out of balance. Are you parking with the wheels turned?

Exactly. Tires are scrubbing on the pavement. Grip, slip/scrub, grip, slip/scrub... To verify have someone get down there by the tire and watch it do it's thing.

Flat spots are more common with tires that have nylon belts and when it's colder. Doesn't matter if the wheel is turned or not although it may be more pronounced since they're leaning over on an edge when turned. Drive a block or two and as soon as they start to get some heat in them the flat spot is gone.

I suspect that the tie rods are the problem. Have them checked.

Ozzie I hope your wrong bro. Bought it last November and it started from day 1. Only when its cold though. I've had tie rod problems with my last mopar though so I wouldn't put it past them.

Apparently a number of people have had to have their tie rod ends replaced prematurely. I've been told that the amount of castor our cars have puts a lot of strain on them.
