I recently swapped out my ProTorque 2800 stall converter for a Precision Industries 2800 stall converter with the exception that it has a 3rd clutch and a sprag. I was and am happy with the ProTorque but it seemed that with the 426 on a 150 shot the engine over took the converter. The idea of a locking converter with the extra clutch made sense. I immediately tracked tested it to see the difference. Since both converters have seen N/A runs and Nitrous runs I have enough data to do a real worls track comparision. Turns out the Precision Industries gives me a strong quicker launch and that is proven by consistent 1.6 60' launces......HOWEVER it appears that in the 1/8mi I lost a 1.5mph. I can only attribute this to the converter "locking up" much harder.....pulling on the motor. I have not had an opportunity to check this in a 1/4. I can state that I have tried to get it to "spin" the converter on a 150shot and it definetly seems to grab and not want to let go.
In order to stop the monetary bleeding......I'm leaving in the Precision Industries installed. I have a ProTorque for sale!
Well if you think your time is suffering because it's locking up to hard and pulling down the motor when it does that, then... you may need a higher stall or more likely, MORE HP!
That is good to know as I have the same PI 3200 3rd clutch etc install in mine. I believe this is the way to go and very much suited to big power motors. Just my opinion though.
Here ya go Steve. 1/8 mile 7.18 @ 97.65 converted to 1/4 mile at the same altitude you ran in the 1/8 mile 11.2726 @ 124.0155 http://www.chevyasylum.com/calc8_4/calc8_4.html
Speaking of one TC locking up more than another look at the difference between 2 different TCM's. There is 2 videos and 2 data logs, with the stock TCM between shifts the rpm's drop to a hair below 5000 rpms but with the Mopar TCM the rpm's drop down to about 4300 rpm's between shifts. Is this because the Mopar TCM is locking up right away and dragging the engine down between shifts, for what I am seeing it must be locked before or during the 1-2 shift Is this good or bad, I switched back to the stock TCM and raised the shiftpoints to 6400 and am running it like that STOCK TCM MOPAR TCM STOCK TCM MOPAR TCM
