So I've always heard/read for awhile now that SRI (Short Ram Intakes) are of no benefit to the Neon SRT-4. That you gain no hp from them but they serve a good purpose of "cleaning" the engine bay up. I've yet to come across any sort of proof to back this statement up. There are websites that have tested (dynoed) a few short ram intakes they make for these cars and it yielded results in hp/tq. So why is it that, this rumor (as I am going to refer it as), gained interest that a lot seem to say the same? The reason I made this thread is to get feedback and reasoning. In order, here are the intakes I've ran on my car since purchase... 1. Stock Intake 2. Stock Intake w/drop-in K&N Filter 3. AEM Short Ram Intake 4. Stock Intake w/drop-in K&N Filter 5. K&N Short Ram Intake (never used the cold-air extension) 6. Stock Intake w/drop-in K&N Filter 7. AEM Short Ram Intake 8. Stock Intake w/drop-in K&N Filter 9. Injen Short Ram Intake (current) Out of all those the only intake I bought NEW was the current one I'm running which is the Injen Short Ram Intake. I installed it today and it came with a dyno graph from Injen showing before and after results. From peak power to max power. The results were: Max power gain: Injen 237.3hp / 251.4tq Stock 227.3hp / 249.2tq 10hp / 2.2tq gain Peak power gain: Injen 234.9hp / 241.0tq Stock 222.5hp / 228.3tq 12.4hp / 12.7tq gain Now Modern Performance tested the AEM Short Ram Intake and their description states: Discuss...
I had to get rid of the stock air box due to a 50 trim I went from stocker to mopar and still have the mopar but the cold air
Perhaps people were talking about the 'seat of your pants' feeling. When you already have over 220 hp at the wheels...10-12 hp gains probably won't be noticeable. I had the AEM SRI (later converted to full-on CAI) and never really noticed. But, in the end, after you start modding the car, everything works in conjunction with everything else.
You could have ran the stock airbox with the 50 trim... with modification of course haha. But I have seen it done before. I like the Mopar CAI but the area I live in tends to flood (well when it rains heavy) so I prefer SRI just as a re-assurance. More then likely so on the "seat of your pants" feeling. I'll be honest, I did a lot of flopping around with intakes as you saw in the original post. Going from the stock airbox w/K&N filter to the Injen today, I felt a difference. I'm sure days will go by and then its nothing to me (like a lot of mods). I can see gains varying based on different setups for sure. All good points and I agree.
Its been done believe it or not go search. You keep the airbox itself. The stock intake tube and neck that holds the filter you scrap. Metal tube bent to size, appropriate size inlet coupler in your case 4" to 3". Tube goes into the airbox with filter within. If I saved the picture I would post it up.
i have an ebay 3" piece of pipe with a 3" k&n and it works good. i noticed the seat of pants feel with the generic intake compared to the stock box but just like jeff said in the end it all comes together. after all a car is like a human being. we all gotta eat, breathe and we all gotta $hit. if we cant breathe were not gonna be eating as much and we cant $hit if we're all plugged up. Any intake in the end plays an important roll in how our cars function whether it be a drop in, SRI, or CAI. an Intake isnt really a power mod its more of a supporting mod. IMO
THATS IT!!!! Thats the point I was trying to make, but I couldn't think of the best wording....you got it right there.
