I mean Rats! In my backyard!

Friday night, went to open the grill and there's one inside, sitting in the bottom, where all the drippings fall. Good size SOB too. Before I had a chance to react, he ducked-down through the open back and scampered into my neighborhor's yard, between the wooden 4x4 fence post.

"This means War!" I said to the wife.

Off to Home Depot I went Saturday afternoon, bought 3 rat traps (BTW: Walmart, at least in this area, doesn't carry rat traps, only mice traps).

Took some peanut butter and dog kibble, baited the traps and set them out. One right near where the SOB escaped on Friday night. The other two, one was set along the fence and one along the side of the house, both of those near other fences.

Around 7:30 pm, I'm sitting on the toilet, just finishing a halfway decent crap, when I hear "Snap!". A few quick wipes, and I'm outside in the back yard.

I nailed the SOB right where he escaped before! But, he's still breathing... and the trap's upside down. I grab a shovel to flip the trap over and finish him off if necessary.

I flip the trap, he twists and hops, and Bam! He's Loose!!! In the blink of an eye, he scampers away! However, he was f'd up pretty bad... unstable and out of it. He was hit by the trap in the upper body, so I'm figuring he'll die and not be back.

This AM, I walk outside, look around, and one of the other traps is upside down too! Holy crap! I've got another!

This one was stone cold dead, but about 1/2 the size of the SOB. So, in a 12 hour period, I nailed 2 rats. 2 in 12 hours! What that means is there's a bigger problem.

I know rats are everywhere, but this is unnerving none the less. My yard and house are clean, neat and well manicured. Hardly any clutter outside at all. No signs within the house or garage of infestation.

I washed and re-set the traps about 15 minutes ago. Any other suggestions?!?!

your neighbor might be breeding them in his shit yard. go over and talk to him. other than that, keep your grill clean and no open food containers.

sounds like you know how to set a trap though, gj. a lot of people dont.

set em up right on fence lines and walls, rats have really bad vision so they use their whiskers to run alongside walls and other objects such as boards.

The slap in the face was this: after nailing the smaller one this AM, I called my 90 lb, alligator-head, police-line bred, male Doberman over to sniff the deceased rat. He comes over, I say "Deuce, get 'em", he sniffs and walks away, glancing back like I'm nuts... as if saying to himself and me: "Listen dumbass, unless its one of Ryan's people trying to break in, don't bother me with this bullshit".

BTW: Ryan's people don't attract rats... the little SOB's dont want to get mixed in with rice and cilantro.

Rick mentioned that. Something about buying red rider bb guns and some beer and going on a sniper mission in my backyard.

I figured firing my service weapon in the neighborhood, especially near a propane grill, wouldn't be smart... but that first night, don't think it didn't cross my mind! LMAO!!!

Yeah...probably not the best idea

But I think beer and a BB gun can be a very powerful combination :thumb:

LMAO, In our first house we had a problem with roof rats in the garage. So down to the local K-mart I go for the baddest pump .22 pellet gun I can get.

Anyhow, 10 cases of beer and 382 fluorescent lamps later......................................I got all them big bastards. :guns::dancing:

red riders wont kill a rat, ive tried, all it does is sting them. get a real pellet gun if you want to shoot them...but you wont see many in the day, they are usually out at night.

what we used to do on our op's in afghanistan was take an ammo can and take the lid off, tie a string from one end to the other with and empty toilet paper roll going through it. cover the tp roll w/peanut butter. the rats go for it and fall in an ammo can. if you happen to have an m40 or a DMR then re-cap the ammo can, stick it out a few hundred meters and see who can kill whats inside first, you or your wife

Nope...WE (wife, daughter, and I) live in an 1100 square foot condo. Our turd of a cat got away...thank God...so WE determined that a Chihuahua would be a much better replacement pet than a larger dog or cat. He takes rabbit sized craps on his little potty pad. We take him for a walk about once a month, and he doesn't take up any of my precious space I'm stuck with here in SOCAL. And, like I tell MOST people with their "compensating" dogs. Beware of the owner...not the dog!

lol, naw dude. i dont see it as a "compensating" dog. thats why i always buy small dogs...its just a chihuahua is like one of the worst dogs in the world. its not cute in any way, its loud, annoying and pisses when you bend over to pet it. i place the dog in areas of annoyance in line with pugs, pekingese, and terriers.

i love dogs, though i would never, ever own a chihuahua. i get a lot of heat about that though, i hate em, but all the girls i seem to date either own one or want to own one. :erm:

Draggin... must be a bitch taking a bath with your pet in the tub... or does he just nibble on the tip???

and Bud don't talk about "compensating" dogs... my little bichon can double as a cotton ball or tampon... like you I reside in So Cal.. but my 2500 sq foot home has a yard.. but it is taken up by a 30K gallon pool... built just for days like today...
