THe other day I noticed oil psi dropping to as low as 16 at a stop. A few days earlier I had changed the oil from M-1 0-40 to Rp XPR 5-20. I had only ever noticed a low of about 26 with the m-1. I also got a blackstone report saying high chrome(rings) WTF! this car has only 20K! Could it be only the differerent oil viscosity causing the low psi?
Most likely the thin oil Howard.16psi at idle isn't the end of the world but you should go back to at least 0w40.The thin oil is not good for the 6.1.
Howdee, after we talked about your oil pressure on Saturday, I checked mine and here's what mine has. Idle @ 180* = 33PSI Idle @ 200* = 24PSI I still think you've got some pre-mature wear with your bearings or rings. I hope I'm wrong.
Well, you have a low mileage motor for starters......so it's possible the rings are still wearing in.......second.....I don't pay too much attention to the blackstone reports. You change your oil regularly and use a good filter and you have done your part. Can't do anymore than that.....otherwise you'll be pulling the block everytime they send you something that looks weird.
You need the 40W viscosity for the oil pressure. Simpley put, the higher the viscosity the more oil pressure. The lower weight, such a 0W on the recommended Mobil1, means when cold the oil will flow freely on startup because it's thinner. Lessening wear.
How high was it? Their lab analysis is excellent. Their flags, recommendations, and interpretations are a bit more generic and mostly based on averages within classes of engines. They do take mileage and breakin into account. A lot of us are using them and I don't remember anyone mentioning high amounts of chrome. Scan your report and post it up.
Well the low pressure was do to oil weight. I'm back up to a low of 24 psi with the M-1 0-40.Here is the Blackstone report showing 12 for chrome where the average is only 2.
I am using royal purple's racing oil and My oil pressure is 25 at idle warmed up and 59 while cruising on the freeway at 65
I have used RP 10-40 before with no problems. This time I sprung for the expensive RP XPR (racing) grade 5-20 Live and learn:ronlove:
