Do you have to get a new ignition key for our cars from a dodge dealer only? Or is there somewhere cheaper that will create one and program it?
If you still have 2 working keys you can buy blanks and use your car to program the electronic part, after having the key cut to fit the ignition of course. It is my understanding if you only have one working key then you need to have the dealer help you in making more. I can't even remember where I found the procedure but it involves inserting the working keys, waiting for red light flashes, listening for chimes, etc.
Just one requires programming by the dealer... or I guess someone with a Starscan. You can buy keys on eBay and what not, and maybe take a chance that they are good. I was down to one and just went to the dealer... Was painful at $170 for a key with cutting/programming... But it was done right. Have seen that it can be much more at some dealers!
I bought two keys on the internet for around $30 and used my two working keys and my car to program them. They don't have the pushbuttons on them as those were a lot more, but they drive the car fine. I think $170 was what my dealer told me to program a key also so you are right on the money.
^ Ouch...yeah, you will need to go to the dealer, or a local locksmith who has the programming equipment.
Anybody know where is the best place to get the blank key fobs for a 2006? Then I could take it to the dealer and have it cut and programed.
^ You could try Ebay, to get the key cheaper than the dealer, but at the end of the day your still going to pay the dealer the labor to cut and program, which is where most of the charge is probably going to come from. You could also try a local locksmith who deals with automotive products, but again most of the charge is going to be in the "labor and programming," so I'm not sure how much savings you will actually see.
