As I´m also a raving idiot on a motorbike and thinking about joining the Ironbutt association I was wondering if there is anything similar in the carworld? I know about Gumball 3000 and the like, but that just seem to be a good way to get arrested... To get a membership in IA you have to do the SS (soure sadle) 1.000, thats 1.000 miles in 24 hrs on a motorbike... Then for the truly insane, you have for instance the Bun Burner 3,000, thats 3.000 miles in 48 hrs, if you want to sleep you better keep the pace up! And fore those who have lost it completly, 10/10, 10.000 miles in 10 days... I´m a bit nuts, but who is´nt? Fredrik
After doing the 10/10 you´ll probably give the bike away and taking an oath never to ride again, I´d have to service my bike 3 times and change rear tyre once if I start with new ones, so thats overdoing it a bit... But I must admit, some carefull planning, a few friends that know how to ride it shouldn´t be a problem, I´ve done a 500 mile run with an average speed of 130 mph including stops for gas and water. It can be done! Fredrik:dumb: Oh, and by the way, you can only use a road once, back and fourth, thats it, so doing serious milage will take some planning...
In my younger days I would have been up for the 10/10, but now, I could probably make the 1,000 run only. haha There are a few Gumball Rally type events here, but yea, you stand a good chance at jail time if you want to be competitive.
There's the 24 hour LeMons (no its spelled that way on purpose). Got some buddies that purchase beat to crap old 70s mopars and run them in this battle of the beaters for 24 hours straight over a weekend each month in different locations around the U.S. Sometimes they even do a weekend up at Altamont. Not exactly what you're talking about, but first thing that came to mind.
Best I've done to this point is 1800 km (1118 miles) in 18 hrs on my Heritage Springer. Longest trip was 11,000 (6835 miles) in 10 days of riding. Rode down to Gatlinburg for a rally, and then headed home along the southern states then north in Arizona. Touched 25 states that trip.
I did drive from Dublin to Ron's house in ABQ in 17 hours as part of the cross-country drive to the Shindig in 2007. Dublin to ABQ to Nashville then up to Kentucky and down to Georgia and then back to Nashville/Kentucky and on to ABQ and home. Something I don't wanna do again for a long long time. Granted the Italian tourists wanting photos with my car was cool.
Longest run i have made in a car was Pomona, CA to Carrollton, TX and back in 50 hours... basically non stop... went to go pickup a 1956 Studebaker Pickup... man that was a rough trip... something like 2400 miles... My uncle wants to do the IronButt thing... i thought you had to do it on a rigid and couldnt use a softail (swingarm)...
No rules pertaining to what you're riding (at least nowadays), just that you document and complete 1000+ miles in 24 hrs or less.
I´m going to ride my Suzuki GSX-R 1000 -06, were planning a night run and we aim at doing it under 10 hours... It will take some effort as we need to stop for gas every 100 miles. Doing it on a ridgid seem like a way to give your chiropractor a lifetime of work! Fredrik:zorro:
The point of using a sportsbike is that you can keep a much higher average speed, unless you catch a lot of unwanted intrest from the police. A normal highwaycruiser (police) is not a problem, a helicopter or loads of cars is a problem... I´ll let you know as things progresses, Chargergirl seems to have done a good stretch though...:ilovesrtc: Fredrik:baby:
