I've been outta the loop for a week or so, but Drew just told me that the Viper (600hp one) will be using the same 6.1 our cars have in the coming years... and still making that power. Anyone care to clarify/provide more details?

No, the '08 uses a 600HP 8.4L V10. In the past week two stockers have dyno'd ~550/515rw SAE bone stock. With full exhaust, and a few more miles one of them dyno'd ~600/550rw SAE. I bet they find another 20-25rw in the tune giving them ~625-630rw SAE with just bolt ons plus the stock longblock. I see this being the first 700rw (with heads/cam on the stock bottom end) N/A production motor ever.
The new V10s much improved heads are allegedly based on the 6.1s (revised I'm sure), and they supposedly use the same pistons/rods as the 6.1s.

I do not think it is using the 6.1 engine per se, rather the technology that the 6.1 uses...

But then again, I could be wrong.

FWIW, you will never see 600 emissions legal SAE horsepower from a 2v/pushrod 6.1 on pump gas.

Its working both ways too. At SEMA, one of the MOPAR Performance engine engineers told me that the new 6.1 aluminum block will have cylinder sleeves that were sourced from the Viper motor.

He didn't have anything on pricing. He said that they were tentatively shooting for a mid-08 release. The biggest news about the new block is that there was enough meat in the sleeves to safely bore/stroke out to 440ci.

Gotta love the factory T356 race blocks Ford, Chevy and now DCX are kicking out. Now we just need top ends that can support that many inches.

The cam swap on a new Viper will be interesting to say the least. It is a "CaminCam" design that is a bit weird.(First type I have heard of and the first supposedly in OHV engine history) I am not as well versed on how it works but it is not your standard cam setup. Check it out: (see paragraph talking about the CaminCam-in-Block)
