So I go out into the garage to get something from the freezer and I notice the smell of gear oil in the air. I'm searching under my XJ looking for a leak, nothing. I take a look under my GC and I see a spot about the size of softball under the front passenger side. I'm thinking to myself, damn the transmition is leaking again. So much for getting it fixed the first time. So I stick my finger in it and it was gear oil. It was leaking down the passenger side support crossmember. I couldn't see anything from the top. Must be from the front diff. I don't recall seeing any threads on "this" particular leak. Any ideas? I guess I will call the dealer tomorrow to see if I can get it in. Merry Christmas to me!

strange, Keep me/us posted. If it has a leak and needs a new seal then talk to Builder and find out what he is up to with his front diff!!!:search:

The vent for the front diff is on the passenger side right above where you found your leak, it is tubed all the way up into the engine bay right by the coolant overflow.

Who knows either the tube came loose on the diff itself or it was a tad overfilled and it came out the vent. Take a look under there and find out.

Dealer called. They said yes it was gear lube and yes it was coming from the vent, but they couldn't deturmine why it pushed out. There were no kinks in the tube and they said the fluid level is right on. They are replacing the vent. I hope not, but this sounds like the start of a greater problem down the road. I will keep you posted.

I would bet that it was not properly seated at the factory.
I would also bet that this will not be an issue in the future.

Did you go for an unusually extended drive (highway speeds) recently?

I went to see my sister over Christmas. About 60 miles each way. Nothing major.
