Found my knocking

    I have had an intermittent knocking/clacking noise that started suddenly 7 weeks ago and I have been chasing it since then. I may have found the problem after disassembling the front of the motor, which is where the SRT tech was sure it was coming from. Still not exactly sure how the noise was being generated but my guess is it was somehow popping or a banging in the chain.

    Pictures follow, but it appears my timing chain was making it's virgin attempts at trying to get off the crank gear. There are signs the chain was pushing against the right side of the tensioner (where the black plastic guide snaps on) in a slight twisting fashion...it pushed the plastic guide forward and broke the inside tabs holding it on.

    The inside edges of the teeth of my crank gear are RAZOR sharp and have been being polished that way for some time...you can see the cooresponding areas on the chain itself. You can also see the chamfer used to accomodate my crankshaft.

    It appears the crank gear itself was not allowing the chain to run in one plane, causing tension on the back side of the crank gear.

    I also included some pictures of my oil pump, which I promptly took apart.

    I believe I have seen pictures similar to this before, although much more aggrevated than in my case. And yes, I have a K-1 crankshaft.

    I am not sure exactly what I am doing next...I think I will bring a scope home from work and have a look in my cylinder bores.

    This is how you remove the oil pump without even lowering the pan. If we can get that bolt started again, we are IN. :)

    Jon...rsgt had a problem with his crank...I am not sure what exactly but sounds like what you are describing...his is an Arington (is that correct name??) 426...shredded his belt....he got some updated pulley and a gear I think...??

    I remember Sarge's thread well...and I agree that was a "rough" chamfer job. One side barely got touched.

    Just realized Jon we are talking about 2 different "sarges".....rsgt is local to me and just recently installed an arrington 426....he is having same problem...his car was at our dealer last week getting an updated crank/gear.........................I would suspect Jeremy will come forward and take care of you on this.............

    Larry, just out of curiousity, what symptoms was rsgt experiencing? How did he come to realize he had a problem?

    Thanks K. UPS blue was a waste of time again as usual so my pump and timing set/tensioner will have to wait until Monday. Someone needs to be fired, I swear. I guess I'll just have to think about it over 15 or 20 beers tonight :)

    The plan is to chamfer the new gear and reinstall in reverse order. There are a few things I will need some help checking to ascertain the extra wear, if any, on my cylinder walls and bearings, but got it taken care of.

    I'll cross those bridges when they arise.

    Fuckin UPS...they should be gova-ment...about the same service level...Well, a few more days ain't gunna killa brutha, especially with 20 beers in him (you slackin bitch). :friends:

    I'm hoping you don't have any EXTRA crap to deal with...I'm sure you know the drill for checking, if not hit a podnaugh up, and i'll point you to Erik...lol...glad to see you have a good attitude about it...Kinda fun huh? :zorro:

    Gear Problem

    Sorry to take so long to reply. My belt shredded because my ATI Dampner was not quite lined up. Those guys at the dealer hate my dampner. I ordered the gear from Arrington and had it put on because I had read on the forum here that some of the guys had been having problems with the oil pumps on their Arrington engines. I just got through dealing with a blown engine and I didn't want to go through that again.
