ok, so i have this extra pcm i got from a member, can't remember his name, but a real tool ....... hehehehe anyways, i get to talking with my tech at the dealer and he tells me of programming he has for the local srt police cars. said biggest dif is the throttle repsonse, increased timing and fuel, etc. now i hear people talk about "police" packages yada, yada, but i never really paid any mind to it. well i had my tech go ahead and reprogram my spare pcm to the car and load the "performance" software that our local police guys use in their srt cars. i drove the car without reloading the pred and noticed it held the gears longer than the pred and had QUICK throttle response, but not much else. i loaded the pred back on with 93 cai, raised shift points, etc (like i had before) and wow, the car feels much crisper than ever. it is exactly the same as it was before with the pred, but now it has much better throttle response and never seems to be in anykind of "flat" spot when accelerating. best the car has felt since i owned it and starting modding it. bottomline, i was very skeptical but it def made a subtle, but nice change!!!!
Ok, I'm confused now. So the PCM has memory and processor(s). There is executable code and data that goes into the memory. Generally things like this are loaded with an "image". That would be the bits and bytes and comprise (almost) everything that goes into the memory(except maybe the bootstrap code). When powered the processor starts executing code at some fixed, physical memory location. So we're back to how does the predator flash a tune? Possibilities include: 1) flashes an entire image (modified or not) 2) flashes a partial image (or fragments) into a certain part of memory. 3) Only flashes data (doubtful since I believe there are constants that are modified which are most likely imbedded in the code sections). It appears to have the capability of "poking" values into specific locations since it is capable of doing the "Quick adjust" things on a running PCM. But what is it doing for the complete tunes? In short, when you reloaded the 93 CAI wouldn't it have replaced the police tune? Or did you make the police tune the base tune and then the 93 CAI was applied to that and then flashed to the car? Could your impressions be SOTP or coincidence due to flashing and flashing again? The police cars are all 5.7's aren't they?
dave - your comments are what made me rather skeptical....... i thought i might also be having some kind of "placebo" effect with my thoughts as well, so i tried just the "performance flash" from the dealer and the same pcm with the pred loaded on it. i could definately tell a difference in the throttle response with the pred loaded. power wise i did not feel anything, but the drivability is what i notice being different when the pred was loaded back on...... i am not anykind of tuning expert so all i can contribute to the discussion would be i can tell a difference. how the pred works i am not sure. i do know that part of the programing also involved my tcm so that could be the big difference. my tech was explaining to me the software was derived becasue of the complaints from leo that the throttle response seemed "lagged". i have yet to put my other pcm back in (it has a b&g flash on it), but i just thought this was kinda of an interesting experience i would throw out here and see what folks had to say. bottom line for me is the car drives great, and the performance at wot throttle still feels awesome!
oh yeah, not all police cars in my area are 5.7's........ there are a few under cover srt's running around!!!!!
kind of what i was thinking, but not sure....... was hoping maybe someone here might have some insight!!!! hahahahaha
no, i am pretty sure they are issued to the police...... at least that is what my leo friends tell me!!!!
It is just like on Miami Vice down there isn't it... I mean from Dodge though. No doubt police have bought SRT8s. I wonder if they have an SRT8 police tune? Note: My understanding is that the 5.7 and 6.1 PCMs and image are identical. The PCM will figure out the engine type within the first second or so upon firing it up and set or use parameters accordingly.
the srt police "tune" is kinda what i got the impression from my tech. miami vice...... oh yeah, i got my sweet pastel colored jacket on right now!!!! hahahahaaha
curtis - at this time i do not have a cmr tune. very much want to do one..... thinking of calling dave and seeing what we can do. that or go see the guys at diablo and spend some "quality" time on their dyno...
Chris, I think a wideband A/F gauge is a must have for you at this point. .... I already have part #'s so we just need pics for the recommended cable routing from the sensor into the cabin. I'm thinking the Innovate LC-1 (controller integrated into the cable) with a Hawkeye/DashHawk for display and logging. Thanks and eagerly awaiting the install pics.
How bout this one Chris. The Diablo works by setting a given value in the PCM. And I know more then a couple guys that have reported that the adaptives will work backwards if ya drive like a sissy. :tooth: Resetting the PCM will wake her back up to the base tune. Just the opposite occures with the BnG that needs the adaptives to dial it's self in. Just a thought.
It seems like it was a TCM flash. I always have and still hate the ETC delay in these cars. My ZO6 also had ETC but had no delay. What dealer did you have this done at and how much did it set you back? Thanks.
cam,cam,cam....... you been talking to ron too much and listening to his blatant lies......hahahahahaha i have actually been beating the snot out of it lately!!!! woo-hoo!!!
dave - have you heard of the software programming that i am talking about??? my tech said it was just for use with the police issue vehicles. my particular version was for the srt's that some units have issued. the cops hated the delay in the throttle response i guess. that is the one major difference i feel. just curious....
