I have a GReddy catch can left over from my SRT-4. Is there anything inside of the cans that people are using for the SRT8's? They all do the same thing, right?
I'll probably just hook it up but if I don't, I'll let you know. I like it because of the sight glass and drain plug. I just have to find a place to mount it.
Negative. Does the baffle keep oil from flowing out of the catch can? Personally, I would mount any catch can below the intake manifold to prevent that.
I have one that looks identical to that one. I purchased it off of eBay for a lot less than the GRe(e)ddy cost. Mine was empty inside also. I built my own internal baffling system using SS screen; SS wire mesh( 2 ChoreBoy SS pot scrubbers); & some 3/8" ID aluminum tubing. I epoxied the screen to the inside of the main body about 1/3 of the way down. I then epoxied the aluminum tube to the fitting that supplies engine vacuum. This tube extends down through the screen to about 1" above the bottom of the catch can. The SS wire mesh sits on top of the screen. Here's how my catch can works: The fitting without the tube( the one above the screen/mesh assembly) is connected to the PCV valve. The engine vacuum is connected to the fitting with the tube. The oil vapor/mist is drawn through the fitting above the screen, through the wire mesh where the oil is "captured" by the screen/mesh. The "cleaned" air is drawn into the tube and sucked into the intake manifold. The oil captured by the filtering process falls to the bottom of the can. I replaced the lower drain fitting with a valve that I can open to drain the accumulated oil.
You can make a catch can thats lots cheaper and works just as well but its not good looking compaired to the billit ones. Cost was about 50 bucks . Air compressor water and oil trap from sears 25 buxs then two 3/8 90 degree angel fittings plus hoses n clamps. I T WAS A GREAT THING FOR THE SRT-4.
errr, ummm, if that's the one I'm thinking of it doesn't do much. No baffling, no stainless packing to provide much greater surface for condensation, no mechanism to prevent trapped oil from exiting the outlet under hard cornering, acceleration or braking.
keeps the oil vapors from the crank case that are ported back into the manifold to be burned off, from going back in the manifold and building up. i installed mine, and in one week was surprised to see how much oil vapor actually gets vented back into the manifold!!!
They trap oil (vapors) from the pcv valve that might otherwise condense in your manifold. The 6.1L's are prone to passing a bit more oil vapor through the pcv system. Same with LS motors and others. This is generally true of motors with positive boost as well. The idea with the pcv is that blow by and off gassing from the oil is routed back into the intake manifold, burned, and handled by the cats for emissions. If there is a lot of vapor then there will be noticeable condensation in the intake manifold. Probably doesn't do any damage but it can't be optimal for engine performance. With the SRT8 motors it seems that we're trapping, more or less, a couple of tablespoons of liquid oil every 500 miles or so. So this oil wouldn't all be liquid if allowed to pass through the intake manifold but it would all be getting burned eventually. http://www.srt8oc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10542&highlight=catch+installed
I'm guessing that would be a NO... People are putting on CAIs and going to the dyno. You put on a catch can and go "yea, I see some oil in there"... Somebody said they went 3K? and got a few spoons full. So the question is what should you expect and then you can go a bit further to say these are good catch cans and these are not. ...sometimes I come to the realization that I'm surrounded by peasants...:cry:
