in the case of an aqurium, the only flow you have is water moving...... thereby you need the chilling mechanism to "chill" the water by a means other than air flow. in our case, the air is that "mechanism" too chill the water. unless norcal's fishtank is moving at freeway speeds, in order for him to be able to cool the water after running through all his pumps, etc., is to utilize a chiller. we have the advantage of having cars that move and generate lots of moving air over radiator type structures to cool it!!! i think ricks comments probably hit the nail on the head!!! dahahahahahaa
Well... you're using the big radiator to transfer heat from the water and then using the small cooler to transfer heat from the compressed air. Like Chris said, you're moving massive amounts of outside air through the big radiator for heat transfer. I think the btu's you're talking about are huge. I'm guessing you would need a cooler with more capacity than the one for your whole house air conditioning. Maybe a building size unit? At 5000 rpm you're moving something like 254 liters of air through the motor ... a second. You're dropping the temp how much? 10*? 20*. (never thought about that... how much do the blower coolers do? What's the temp drop before and after the cooler?) Ron's fish tank is how big? and how long does his pump take to change the temp 10*? hours? You're going to need to scale up. Think about your car air conditioner. Those take about 5 hp? and move some relatively miniscule number of liters per second. Just some wild speculations on my part but I'm thinking you might need some sort of power adder for your cooler so it's small enough to fit under the hood. Maybe you could run the cooler motor on nitrous so you could run the engine on FI :grin:
Just went out to wash the car and I was thinking this is a great thought problem. Then I was looking at my Zaino stuff and I thought of Tony... Tony is a HVAC guy! Tony will be able to tell us which Carrier unit we'll need for the job and how much juice it will take to run it. So the original postulation (which you have to go all the way over to lxforums to read...) was to use Ron's fish tank cooler to cool the water that carrys heat out of the air to water heat exchanger that's inline with your blower. Let's try to throw some really rough numbers to it. Let's take the 1/4 mile. We'll assume that you average about 5500 rpm for 11 seconds (you got a blower right?). So that would be: 5500 rpm / 2 (compression stroke) = 2750 rpm moving air 2750 / 60 = ~46 RPS 46 RPS * 6.1L = ~281 L/s 281 L/s * 11s = 3091 L of air. So here's the question for Tony: We want to drop the temp of about 3,091 liters of air from maybe 120* to 100* in about 11 seconds. Which Trane unit is going to do the job? and how much juice do we need to run it? (281 liters per second). Let's say the existing cooler drops it from 120* to 118* and we just want to go that extra 2*. What size unit do we need to cool 281 liters per second by 2*? This will just give us an idea of the scale we're dealing with. Now let's think about using the tank cooler to help the existing system. We'd need to know the same stuff we needed for the air calculations above. What volume of coolant are we talking about cooling in how much time? I'm guessing that Ron's cooler takes hours? to drop the tank temperature a degree or two? I think we'd be talking about a number of tanks in a fairly short amount of time. One minor (haha) point here. Ron's tank cooler is removing heat from the water. Just where is that heat going? Does it have a radiator? and a fan? We might be getting back to what we started with?

For the strip.....I would use an ice bucket for the water. You could use it on tthe street if you want to drive from 7/11 to 7/11. Maye a CO2 bottle kit? ..
