Folks, do the research, but here's the jist beginning January 1, 2008:

    1. Caught street racing? Car impounded 30 days (similar outcome for 'displays of speed' - whatever that means).
    2. Talk on a cell phone (non hands free) while driving? $70 fine.

Looks like California streets should be looking good in the next few years with all the fines coming shortly! You'll be safe though with your badge....a-hole! hehe

Unfortunately, I think traffic fines go in the general fund, which is why it's everyone's favorite way to generate revenue.

But I could always give up my citizenship and come back into the states illegally....

CA Cities Suspend Unlicensed Driver Impounds: Unfair Burden on Illegal Immigrants?

The LA Times reports two California cities are following LA's lead: they're no longer impounding the cars of unlicensed drivers. Scofflaws apprehended in Bell Gardens and Huntington Park can now reclaim their cars immediately– instead of waiting a month and paying hundreds of dollars in fines and fees.

I think that the cell phone one is July 1st 2008.

Also I think that I heard this one on Friday night... you can not smoke in your own car with a child inside it.

We'll take your Cali laws and raise you 5000. October 1stish, the Province of Ontario suspends your licence for 7 days and impound your car if you are caught "stunt driving" whatever the f*** that means. I know this includes street racing and going over the speed limit by 50 kilometers. Here's the intentional un-lubed butt-plug...if you try to negotiate or argue in any way with the officer....$5000 dollar fine. Save it for the courtroom. Judge and jury right at your car door. How convenient! We still haven't wised up with the cell phone law though...but we should, and soon. I see people on their cell phones literally every single day not paying full attention to what they should be doing. Thank God senior citizens don't bother with cell phones.

some might disagree with me but the cell phone law is stupid. Its just a band aid for the real problem. IDIOT DRIVERS! Who teaches their kids how to drive anyway? I haven't looked into drivers ed lately but since there's one in the house chomping at the bit for a license I'm sure I'll be hearing about it soon. I really think education would be more beneficial then a stupid law, whats next? a law against playing with your stereo or moving your seat? I talk on the phone while I'm driving but I pay attention to the road not the phone.

Besides, cops don't enforce it unless its blatently obvious. Especially when you see them doing it all the time.

While this at times may work for speeding, street racing can be a different story. Why? Because 2 cars are pulled over... the officer can't seize just one.

Seriously. If a foreign-plated vehicle is given a ticket, what are the repurcusions? Not alot. Just don't drive that vehicle, plated with those tags, back into the USA.

    True and true.

Yeah, the bigger issue is indeed morons on the road. Its the same thing with gun laws: scrutinize the good citizens and place 1000 hurdles in their way before getting a gun, when the crooks 99.9% of the time use stolen weapons in the commission of crimes (no way to trace it back to them).

Wasn't the single occupant in a carpool lane fine being raised again as well?

The road funds get raped by the politicians every year to pay off the school teacher unions, and other state employee unions. The employees only see a few pennies of it here and there ,are happy for a while till the politicians raise the cost of living.
