I think it's more one of those things where it may not hurt you significantly not to have one (unless you're going to hang on to the car and push the average duty cycle) but you're better off having one. The oil accumulation in the manifold probably won't ruin anything within the normal duty cycle -- 80K? 100K? 120K?. If it occassionally or constantly effects performance by a small amount the tradeoff would be a relatively expensive factory system. I would expect something like a catch can with the drain returning the condensed oil back to the pan or a fairly huge resevoir that would last at least a couple oil changes. Now effecting A/F? I suppose we'd have to know how much oil goes through there and the effect. I'm collecting about 2 tablespoons of condensed liquid oil for 20 gallons of gas? Don't know how much is still vaporized or the amount of blow-by gasses that are not condensed out. The amount of stuff introduced through the PCV is not going to be constant or proportional either. Gets back to if you're going to go to bother installing a catch can you might as well get one that functions well/efficiently. Sarge only mentions the one he has and the other one he looked at way back when. We need to talk him into doing comparison trials with those two, the BT, and the McKinney... Sarge? "It's not the law, it's just a good idea." k:
Sorry Sarg, but there are couple of thing I completely disagree with ya on. First, the leaks occur at the oil return ports. This I have seen many times an not just on my motor. IMO, the leak occurs because of the relation between the seal area and the phenolic material and the heat expansion and lack of of the mating area. :wallbash: I'll buy the drinks for anyone that pulls their manifold and shows me no leaks between 2 & 4 and especially 5 & 7 with only using the gastkets. Now, the Bilet tech catch can is chambered. There is seperation between the inlet and outlet ports. Take a hard look through the screen that retains the drip/filter media. Now, is their design the best out there. Sorry to say, I luv my Billet Tech, they have all become very good friends. But no, The design of the chamber lends itself to having condensed/dripped oil being sucked back into the reurn port. It is not as effective as lets say the Elite design. Also the hose has to go, no doubt there. But, it does work. And for the money spent and quality of product. It's damn great bang for the buck. Also, having seen a few sets of heads that did not use some form of catch can, the intake and the heads become extremely saturated with oil residue. Is it sticky to the touch...no, but it's there. I installed my Elite catch can with my new heads. 9K miles later, there are almost spotless as is the intake. I'll post some pic's tomorrow. This mod is something everyone should really consider.
Hey Cam I have removed a few Jeep and LX intake manifolds. I have opened the throttle bodies and shown the owners the oil cooked and caked at the bottom of the intake manifold plenum. We can have a friendly disagreement, but the oil source is blowby that comes up from the crankcase via the (passenger side) intake manifold pcv port. Flip any 6.1 manifold over and you will see the chamber, remove the plate and you will find it bathed in oil. That oil by passes the PCV valve and enters the manifold through the vacuum port behind the throttle body. From there it is distributed into the entire manifold, manifold runners, intake ports, valves and into the cylinders. This oil condition will occur in the port and runners and will occur whether or not you run phenolic spacers, no spacers, have 200 miles or 100,000.......and I'll buy a steak with those drinks if this is not the case!
10-4 bud, no argument on this condition, it exists. I talking raw oil between those ports with the phenolic spacer and two gaskets. And it was not present in the manifold. This occured on two different manifolds and two sets of heads. I got mine to completely seal after applying copper head gasket spray on the gaskets. The stock gaskets kinda suck.
Seems we missed a lively discussion LOL. Cam, thats why we use you as a tester. You are candid and tell your side no matter. Cam is a tester for our spacer because he is not going to kiss ass for us. We want guys who know their stuff when it comes to motors and Cam and Scott are guys we respect and trust. Ok on the spacers, we have some design changes we need to do on them based on our findings on Scotts car. The product must be right. The test results are very good, but what good is good if we bring the product out without complete testing and to be sure that it is going to perform as we say. We are hoping to have a group buy ready next month. Scott posted in here that we have a killer fuel rail coming. That is true and pictures will be ready with an install on Scott car within the next 10-20 days. On our catch can. All I can say about that is we feel we tried to bring a quality product out at a good price (and by the way we are going to put up the $15 group buy discount again for the holidays). Some one mentioned we were more interested in the bling. I would disagree on that, because any product that goes out of our facility we want it to not only function well, but we also take great pride in making sure it is made with attention to detail and if that includes making sure that it looks good on top of that to me that is an added bonus to the consumer too.
No question, the BT catch can is simply gorgeous. Form and function combined just perfectly IMO. I was never into the under-hood bling thing. Until I bought the BT catch can. Now I think I'm an addict. :drugs:
For what it's worth guys, this statement is no BS. Heidi and the gang will work their ass's off to bring a quality product to market. There are a few products in the works that will be strictly performance related. I just haven't sent them the design yet.............................hahahaha. Always consider this with BT, they will work through a project with your objectives in mind everytime. They are not the kind of vendor that just say's "this is it, that's the way it's gonna be and you get what we send you..........................have a nice day".
cam i could not agree with you more on bt...... quality company, quality products, and most importantly, quality peeps!!!!
