late, no traffic, so i goose it a bit on the belt goin east from the gowanus to the verrazzano bridge. nothing crazy, maybe got it up to 110 or so when my V1 indicates two laser alerts comin from the rear, in quick succession. shit. i coast and scan the rearview, thinking of taking the first exit coming up (coney island) when i see the flashing red & blue. i take the exit and pull over, immediately shutting down the engine, turning on the cabin lights, hands on steering wheel - you know the drill. nypd van pulls up behind me, and through its windshield i spot a couple of young guys. the driver's got this grin going on, and i immediately think to myself that i have a chance here. a total of three officers approach me from all sides and ask me to roll all windows down, which i do immediately. "are you late somewhere, did something happen?" asks the driver. "no" "testing out the new ride?" i think for a second, and decide to be straight up. "yes sir" "you flew by pretty fast back there. license and registration." i give them the stuff. "how's your license, clean?" "yes, it was until now" "i'm gonna run your license and if it's clean you can go" holy shit i'm relieved. in ny, anything 40 over the limit and if the officer feels like it, he can take your license on the spot and confiscate your car. they run my papers and come back "here. be careful, drive slower" "thank you officer. did you get me with laser?" "yes. you flew by and slowed down before i hit you, and even then got you at 105. slow down!" "thank you officer" that was that. i didn't know nypd had laser, this is the first i've seen of it. i thought i was safe in the city, but now it looks like i need to get the laser shifters. $900. ouch. oh yeah, the point of this story - some cops can be pretty cool.
nypd has had laser for a while, it's not new. they just don't have that many of them. not to sound like an ass, but save yourself the $900 and don't do 100mph on the belt. not that it's a great highway anyway to be speeding on. if you don't drive like an asshole all the time you don't need $1300 in radar goodies.
that's good advice - most of the belt is indeed a screwy ride, but the section between the verrazzano & gowanus is relatively flat & straight and has good visibility. 4 years ago i got clocked on the same stretch of hwy, 88 / 50. cop gave me a ticket, looked me square in the face, and told me that if he'd gotten me 2mph faster, it would have been his great pleasure to take my license and tow my car. some people just never learn.
2 things... how the hell do you guys find places anywhere NEAR NYC to go that fast?...i couldnt get above 20mph on any road going in to or around NYC if i tried normally haha... and you got run down by a VAN!?! hahahaha...just kidding...but yeah you got lucky...i save my speed for the racetrack for that reason...i already have 2 tickets on my record from the mustang
Promo, I have this set of shifters and they work great!, this one new 2 bills! http://cgi.ebay.com/Escort-Laser-Sh...ryZ39767QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I noticed this and found it ironic (OK, I'm biased... but... ) Everyone said 'lucky', yet the point that some cops can be cool was dismissed. Just an observation.
