I think a lot more women and men are aware of the increasing risks of continuing on the pill regimens for lengthy periods of time. Really happy to hear your wifey caught this now and not later Clove.

Make your decision yet? It's really a breeze. Once you get past the stick of the needle in your scrotum when they give you a local, it doesn't hurt much. A tug here, a tug there...it's all good.

And, of course everyone will want pics...

not sure where you're getting your info from, but 15% is WAY off. vasectomy has a failure rate of about 0.2-1%, and that's actual, not theoretical (which is .02-.1%).

first, copper is no longer included in todays iud's. they are made of plastic. the iud's in the 1960's were made of copper, but that was dicsontinued due fears of metal poisionings and increases in tss.

second, that is not why iud's work. do a quick google on iud's and you'll get all the info you need. here, i've done it for you....

from mirena's website (one of the most commonly used iud's):

The Mirena is intended to initially release a daily dose of 20 micrograms levonorgestral (a progestin). It is not known how exactly Mirena works. It has several effects on the reproductive system, which are believed to explain its use to prevent pregnancy.
    * Frequency of ovulation is reduced.
    * Cervical mucus is changed to obstruct passage of sperm through the cervix.
    * The presence of a foreign body in the uterus prompts the release of leukocytes and prostaglandins by the endometrium, substances that are hostile to both sperm and eggs.
    * The endometrium is thinned.[8] It has been suggested that this inhibits implantation of embryos, though no experiment has yet confirmed or disproved this theory.

While there is no single explanation for how Mirena works, it may:
    • Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
    • Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)
    • Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this is not the way it works in most cases)
It is believed that all 3 of these actions may work together to prevent pregnancy

i've bolded the interesting parts. even the makers of the most popular iud in use today don't really know why it works lol. they can guess, but no one really knows. putting big fancy words in literature impresses people and makes them think that they know what they're doing, that's all lol

and as for china - it's all about cost. inserting iud's is much cheaper than tubal ligation, and since the government is paying for it they're all about what's cheaper.

i completly agree. unfortunetly many people do not, which is where the problem lies.

    thanks!!! :king:

sorry about the 15%. the article i read actually said .15% from the WHO data taken at the same time as the IUD testing for a side by side comparison.

as far as copper goes, those are the iuds that china is using. i was working off their data from WHO, not mirenas. mirena is a hormonal whereas paragard is a copper based iud and yes indeed it is still used commonly today.

as far as how the IUD works, i was going off what a doctor told me (i may have misspelled). i work in the health care field, specifically in the IT dept of a Sutter health care subsidiary. one of our depts deal with teen pregnancy prevention, i consulted the medical director there before i made the choice to go to IUD from the pill.

the reason why i dont go by what a manufacturer states is because i and any logical person would never trust a manufacturer of a device over the people who actually see them in action on a day to day basis. since the IUD is tested as having a near perfect record compared to other alternatives, i would trust that over someones fears of how it actually works. its been around this long and not caused nearly as many issues as the pill, so i for one will go with it over anything else that may or may not cause health issues....

especially when the top doctors in their field recommend it as primary means of pregnancy prevention.

quick google searches will never get you all the info you need. you have to dig a bit deeper than a google basic search....especially when the first 20 pages of data are all from manufacturers of the device.
