Hey D, very provocative thread. My slant on this is simple. If this satellite hit a populated area, the 11 million would seem like spit in the ocean compared to all the lawsuits that would follow. As well, if I gave you or anyone the task to fire a missile from a ship in the ocean, 100-150 miles in the air and knock it out on the first try, how much would you need? First you need a ship!..... That's going to cost ya!..... The unintended consequence, ( or maybe premeditated) is a message to any earthly megalomaniacs, "look what we can do".
As far as "government assistance", this country offers more opportunity for the motivated to pick themselves up and make a decent life for oneself than anywhere else on the planet. The problem is once we involve the government, you sanitize the transfer of wealth. A government handout is exactly the same thing as walking up and down your block asking for help.... Half the problem with entitlements is the aministrative costs alone, associated with these programs. The gov's motto is "how do you give a little money to the needy?,.... start with alot" Just thought I'd offer my 2 cents.

    You make great points......

My issue wasn't the neccesity to shoot it down, but the cost of the bloody rocket.....

Secondly, I'm not talking about entitlements at all....... I'm addressing the need for proper public education of all those who fall through the cracks...

Screw handouts... They only proffer vehicles for corruption by parasitic pulsating sphinctors like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.... I'm talking about hiring teachers that actually teach... On the educational totem pole the US currently stands at levels so low that you need a fkn backhoe to find us....

Perhaps schools could be incentivized by offering a meal to the students who actually attend classes...... get some bilingual (foreign language speaking) teachers to provide these kids with the essential tool for learning in the US...... It's Called ENGLISH.

Entitlements are horseshit, but spending some bux on infrasastructure and proper educational incentives can make kids feel that there's a glimmer of hope for their future that doesn't include dying in a turf war or laying in a frickin' alley fkd up on paint fumes......:usflag:

If the rocket didn't cost $11 million then how could they justify $7,000 for a toilet seat? It's a vicious circle.

Restating my original point is about as productive as referring to me as an asskisser.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. There's alot to share re: education in America. I'll bet kids are still basically the same. They will try to get away with as much as possible until someone or something challenges them. I taught regents Biology grade 7-12, for 4 yrs. (starting pay 14k I left at 17K) The kids want a hero, they want hope, stucture, fairness. The homelife was miserable for some of these kids. But, the one common denominator was, they wanted to be praised for their accomplishments and believe it or not disciplined when necessary. The "gang" mentality now pervading these children is poison. But, psychs say the gang is replacing the family responsibility. Single parent homes,.... or two parent homes but, both are working most of the time, This discussion is so multifaceted, how about the garbage they are exsposed to every day. We watched "My little Margie", "Father Knows Best" "My three Sons", "Flipper", "Lassie", "Sky King", etc. etc. Channel surf the MTV garbage or reality shows. Keep channel surfing and count how many times the TV scene depicts gunplay. How about the music? if a generation is reflected in their music, I'll take Traffic, Cream, the Band, anyday compared to what is out there now. Everyone has the same bit of raw material that will turn you into an individual (23 chromosomes from each parent) How much does the environment influence what individual characteristics these cells grow into is anybodies guess.

    Brilliant observation......

We need some specialists..... entertaining and compelling personalities to bring both fascination and pertinence to education.... If I had only heard the quote "those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it", at an early age... I would have understood the relevance and importance that learning history has to my own life and to the human experience in general.....

But teachers are so grossly underpaid that no one with that level of quality wants to touch teaching...... They'd rather run around in shorts and throw a ball into a hoop with netting on it..... or some other such thing....

    Great contribution Joe...... as always....

Thank you for the kind words. It could be a little daunting "hanging it out there" when it comes to personal feelings and opinions on topics such as these.
