We have (3) prairie dogs..... This is Maximillian: He's named after the big scary robot in the movie, "The Black Hole". This is Chamonix: She's named after one of my favorite places to ski. She loves her 'corn wheel'! This is Loki: Yep...the Norse god of Mischief. True to his name.
How friendly are those little buggers? They sure are cute.... but, they look like they'd take your face off, if they got "upset". Do they like to hide things, like Ferrets?
Oh, they can bite. Their front teeth grown constantly throughout their life, so they spend lots of time chewing. That chewing sharpens them up quite nicely. Benchmark has nothing on our little guys. LOL They only bite when threatened or really don't want to be held. It's only happened a couple of times, when we first got them. Tip: don't offer a rodent your fingertip to smell. They think it's a treat and will bite it, relishing in the soft part of your fingertip as their lower teeth rip right through the skin. Offer them a knuckle instead. It's mostly bone with a little skin covering it. They're not fond of that type of 'feel'. If you didn't follow the above advice and the rodent did bite you, PUSH your finger into their mouth and they'll release it. I know that's opposite of instinct, but it works. And, if you want to stop a rodent from moving, cover it's eyes. They don't really hide stuff, but they do "build". They're very busy animals. They don't really sit in your lap. They've always got stuff to do. We've given them plenty of things to chew on, so they're not too bad about chewing our stuff or the house. They love the taste of drywall though. LOL They're diurnal, so they sleep at night....and during crappy weather. I've built them little carpeted ramps in front of a few of the windows so they can climb up and look outside. They love to watch absolutely nothing happening. P-dogs are one of the few animals that does better in captivity than they do in the wild. In captivity, they can live up to 10 years; in the wild they live about 5 years. They're the chicken mcnugget of the animal kingdom- EVERYONE eats them. They're a keystone species, so when you kill off the p-dogs, you kill off about a hundred other species as well. Yes- they do bark.
:good: nice lookin pits...I'm going to get a pure pit when I get a house. I love them. I never knew anyone had prairie dogs as pets...nice
That's not very "funny"... But, I LMAO!  Thanks for the advice, Kevan! They sure are cute.
I wonder who would win.... The Prarie-Dogs, or my friend's pet "Buddy". :fear:izza: Buddy likes rabbits! ..... He wants to love them, and squeeze them, and call them George..... But, I would think the 'Dogs would win.... Like Rikki Tikki Tavi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qhBxv7r5gg
Heh heh...you can't really train them, but they're very, VERY smart. They have a vocabulary of about 300 'words' that they communicate with other P-dogs with. "Man" and "Man with Weapon" are pretty sophisticated for little 2 lbs. animals. Our little ones certainly know the words "NO", "Lettuce", and everyone's favorite: "Almonds"! Their feces is quite dry. It's a very small pellet, about the size of a tylenol capsule. If they're sick it'll change color (normally a dark brown), or get very liquid. Unfortunately, you can't own them anymore. A pet store in WI botched a quarantine of a Gambian Rat (about the size of a house cat!) who are notorious carriers Monkey Pox, and a few p-dogs were in with the rat during transport. P-dogs are great carriers, so they contracted the Monkey Pox..and passed it to one of their new owners. No one died, but the CDC got involved and everything got jacked up. In their initial statement after the Monkey Pox incident, the CDC announced that it was illegal to purchase any of a huge list of animals, including p-dogs. The one animal they left off the list: The Gambian Rat. Nice work, fellas!!! Why not? Half the rest of the animal kingdom's in there. At least that's what it smells like.
Cute puppy Juan, does she have pit in her it looks like it in the face? Those are some pretty big paws. I thought you weren't aloud to have dogs at the place that you are at? But what happened to Lexus?
