You've been a tad hostile toward me for some time, I really hope you can get past it--sorry, not even momo had a shot. :deshade:
Good post Andy, I just installed my BT Catch Can last week and got the BWoody setup with new lines and connections yesterday, will take pics and do a write up.
Hehehe, yup, just waiting for that to come in and I have some work to do on the car added with a sprinkle of frustration, fury, scraped knuckles, phone calls, and a trip to my installer lol. Not the catch can though...I'm hoping that's cake haha.
How long can you let these cans go between emptying them? Also, can the reclaimed oil be poured back into the crankcase? j/k on the last question... not really.
It would depend. Not all catch cans are created equal. I've been trying to get everyone to save their trapped oil to get a decent measurement over a large number of miles. With some averages you could compare catch cans for function. It's starting to look like all the quality ones are catching somewhere around 20 ml per 1000 mi? Too early to say. With the reservoir on all these you should be able to go a couple of thousand with no worries. Depends on the can design, but on many, as the reservoir gets full there is a greater chance of liquid oil getting sucked out the can outlet. Turns, bumps, etc. I would expect less oil if you're running a lower t-stat and lower engine temps. I don't see any reason not to put it back in the engine. The pcv system is meant to route the nasty gasses and emissions to be burned and then handled by the cats. It's just that some oil gets vaporized as well. What condenses in the catch can shouldn't be much different from what's in the oil pan. But since it's a few tablespoons every 1000 miles or so it's not worth taking off the oil cap to pour it back in. GotStroke?, that looks like a huge quantity compared to what others are seeing? Any ideas on that? I'd be worried.
I have one from JMB on my 10 and have attempted to empty it many times... but there is never anything in there. ???
Are the 10's that different? Some engines are more prone to more oil through the pcv. You got oil squirters? and what kind of can is it? got mesh/stainless steel wool for condensation and stuff like that? [Edit] oops, JMB, you said that. pic?
(Not mine) Here is a pic from the website.... Some of the guys get quite a bit in there.... some don't... It seems to be more oil blow-by with the Manual Trans (Reg. Cab) tho.
Quick, I have the kit from Blackstone Labs and can take a sample of mine and send it to them for analysis
I usually check at 500-1000 miles, so this was the first time I've seen a "significant" amount of oil in the can. I haven't been doing much different lately, though since you mentioned earlier, I have been making more shorter trips that don't allow the motor to completely warm. Otherwise I run Motorcraft synthetic 5w-50 oil now vs Mobil 1 0w-40.
Cool. I actually asked them about that but the question was "can I just send you a sample from what I collect in my catch can?". They said they would expect it to be different than what comes out of the pan since it's been "distilled" so no. But that was for sending a sampe for normal oil analysis. If you're going to burn a sample to find out can you send it along with your regular sample from the pan? That way there would be a direct comparison.
I'm going to have to guess that's why you're not seeing much oil in your can. Wouldn't that also cause a vacuum leak?
