Why would I want a larger throtle body and then kill a lot of the advantage by staying wih the samaller size CAI intake tube diameter? A little math here....on a 1/4" inch of flow loss (3.5" dia circle - 3" dia circle = 1/4" circular diameter) on the smaller 3" diameter cai inlet.. Area of a circle = pie * radius squared Pie = 3.14 3.0" throttle body radius = 1.50 (radius is 1/2 of 3.0") 3.5" throttle body radius = 1.75 (radius is 1/2 of 3.5") so.... 3" cai tube inlet 1.50 (radius)squared = 2.25 3.14 x 3.06 = 9.61 So area of 3.0" CAI intake tube end is about 7.06 square inches 3.5" intake side 1.75 (radius) squared = 3.06 3.14 x 3.06 = 9.61 So area of 3.5" throttle body intake side is about 9.61 square inches 9.61-7.06=2.55 square inches of lost flow. So this means if I am reducing the intake from 3.5" to 3" for the CAI tube adapter I am loosing 2.55 square inches of flow. 2.55 square inches sounds small but that is a huge effect on flow (draw a square that is 2.5" by 2.5" and imagine how much air you could move thru it). In piping calculations I have heard that the rough equivalent is 6 times the flow for every pipe size. Not to mention pressure losses which will also be a side effect. I think that we will need new CAI intake tubes that end at 3.5" and not 3.0" to take full advantage of the purpose for which we bought a larger intake throttle body
Hmmm hey Andy when I get back in town I will give you a call and seee about getting a coated manifold with one of these babies as well. Looking forward to it
The first run was bone stock. The second pull was a bone stock car tuned, the third run, we added a cai and CAI tune, the fourth run, we added the 90mm tb and tuned for it. We did all of this in the course of 2 hours, so yes there is even more power to get out of this unit. Keep in mind that this is a prototype and the production unit may perform even better. This was all done on a bone stock intake manifold. This is a gain of 47rwhp/52rwtq from a CAI/Tune/90mm TB. There isnt a better bang for the buck out there.
Was the CAI a 3" inlet with 3.5" to 3" adapter installed? If not it would be nice if you could check thatt setup so we could tell if there is a diff or not. If it WAS done this way, can you get a CAI with a 3.5" inlet and see if you get more.
Hey now, taking it in the rear doesn't count. Andy knows, I ported my intake opening at the TB to +90. So it's a bolt on with no restriction to flow.
