I have a friend who recently purchased a Magnum R/T. He really wanted an SRT, but couldn't afford one. Now he is looking to upgrade his magnum, and basically turn it into an SRT. I would like to know if the main difference in the engine is the head and cams, or if the block is also different? In other words, can he get the heads and cams out of a wrecked SRT and put it on his RT block? We also figure that he needs the intake manifold, Exhaust, PCM, and suspension to make it perform like an SRT. What else are we missing?
The short block, heads, and cam are all different between the 2. The SRT has a bigger bore, bigger heads, and bigger cam. You can have a 5.7 bored and add new pistons to get 6.1L...though I'd stroke it too if you're going through all of that work.
Kind of talking apples to oranges. When stroking the 5.7, he'll be getting forged parts which are much stronger than the OEM parts. A used OEM 6.1 shortblock is roughly $2500-3k. A cheaper stroker motor could be built for about $3k too.
With all these mods in sight, wouldn´t it be cheaper to sell the R/T and get an SRT-8 instead? That way you get the whole package even though its a bit more money to begin with. Fredrik:happy:
Lot to be said for that. The suspension is significantly different as well. You should have him talk to JarZ who just went from a tricked out R/T to a SRT8.
