Because at 30K, mine are squealing like crazy....... I'm already planning on replacing them...just curious.
It's not about milage... for some... It is how you drive your car... If you look through one of the spokes on your wheels... you should be able to see the pads... if they are low.... then it is time to change... But I would bet it is time to get new pads...
haha yup, and to go fast in a 2 ton car takes a lot of brakes to stop. Jeff, call Dave from Zechausen and get you some Ceramics. You will be happy with the lack of dust.
We got those reminder tabs. Little piece of spring steel bent 90* that contacts the rotors when the pads get low enough. Those will make a lot of squeal/noise. Should be visible on the rotor too.
So....30K seems to be pretty good then. I already took a peek at the calipers through the wheel and can tell they are getting low. I thought they should last longer though. I don't drive like a maniac very often....way to many LEO's around here. I swear I see at least two EVERY time I go to work and back...
on my 05 i had 50k on my brakes and still had life left when i turned it in so far on my car i have 18,500 miles ish...and still have pretty good life left
I changed my pads (all around) at about 9,700 mi. had about 30% left. (That was with about 1/2 doz. track days) Had another track day (weekend) coming up and decieded I rather change my pads and have FUN all weekend or cut my weekend short, than change the pads. Preventive maintenance = more fun
So.....it turns out I bought some pads that don't fit. They are easy enough to change, but having the wrong pad doesn't help. But....here's the kicker....the current pads are still good...very good. A ton of material left. So...why are my brakes squealing so bad?? It is ear piercing.
Some of the stock brake pads make that squealing noise after awhile. They're fine, they work, they just sound awful. I had the same issue the first few thousand miles on my car and got them swapped under a TSB. Probably too late for you to get the TSB, but definitely a good excuse to get new pads like Ron suggests.
Shims? I assume you still have the stock shims behind the pads? (those really thin stainless things). Those can do it. Different pads (even the same pads but a different set) might do it. Slightly different pad design, different composition, etc. It's just the rears right? I'm really not a fan of sprays or coatings... VERY short term fix at best. It's going to rub off. If it doesn't rub off (impregnates itself in the pad material) or while it's there it has to be compromising your braking to some extent. Not a fan of scuffing the pads and/or rotors for the same reason. You understand the effect right? brake pads "grab" the rotor, then release then grab then release, repeatedly. It's doing that fast enough (frequency) to make a high pitched squeal. That's why it only does it under light braking. It's like dragging your damp finger tip over clean glass. The pads are not rigidly attached to the pistons and they're not in some tracks with tight tolerances or anything so they have a good amount of play laterally. I think the shims serve to break the resonance.
Could also be a build up of pad material on the rotor, you may want to try to bed them in again aka - drove it like you stole it. My Brake Man Pads a time or two did a little bit of squealing after install I just used the car's performance (to get up to speed) and braked a little harded (bedding) and it went away - IMO
My 1st set of brake pads were changed under warranty at 6,800 miles due to some chattering at a slow stop... seem to work fine at regular speed stops, just when I was going really slow. Now these NEW pads stop great and smooth but squeal like crazy too.... should have left well enough alone. In fact had it at the dealer last week and they sprayed brake squeal stuff on it... it didn't help a bit.....
