Anyone who has ever owned a carb'd engine knows this sound. For the last 4-5 days or so, I've been hearing a knock during RPM's of 1200-2500 if I'm in a higher gear driving around town. I only hear it when the engine is "lugging". I've had the same tune now since June or so and I've never heard it until the last few days. My low fuel light is on now and I'm going to try a different brand fuel. I've used 2 of the same stations here the last few days. I'm hoping this is my issue. Anyone else had this issue? I'm also gonna do some logging tonight before/after the new gas. Like I said though, it's only in a higher gear. I can rip it and I won't hear it. I know my engine and I know this sound hasn't been there before. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
Very good chance that the last fill up had a low (but higher than normal) level of condensation from the fuel. Could be that the station had just received a delivery. This can sometimes stir up the underground storage... Does your city/county require ethenol during the winter months? Could be that the stations are starting to mix ethenol in now so that by the middle of October, when the ethenol requirement is due, they are at the exact blend??? Or, I could be off base. lol
I live down in Fla. so we don't really have a "winter blend". I used 2 stations that are the same kind. Come to think of it, my last 2 kill ups were at the same one. The tanks were re-done there in the last 1.5 years. Don't know about the delivery of the fuel. I'm gonna run across town and throw 5-7 gallons of 100 Sunoco in it to see if that takes care of it. My low fuel light is on now. I've been killing the tank to get it low and try to get the fuel out if it is bad. Hmmmm..... this sucks considering I'm going to the track tomorrow night. You know what 1Bad4Dr.... I don't come on this forum that much but every time I do with a question...... you're right there for me with an answer. I appreciate that. You're a cool dude definitely. Thanks for all your help.
aw shucks Harrison, you make me blush. lol :huglove: We are a big happy family here. Doesn't matter where you spend most of your time, as we will ALWAYS be here for you when you are in need. How many miles on your beast? I am wondering if the fuel filters need changing? Just another thought.
I've been wondering that too. I've got 55K on it and to be honest with you.... I don't know if I've had them done yet. I've gotta call my SA chick tomorrow and have her look it up. Only other thing I could think of was if the station accidentally put 87 octane in the 93 tank. I found my receipt and I did in fact put 93 in it. Someone on another site asked me if I put 87 in it by mistake. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. By the way.... wanna snuggle 1Fast4Dr?:huglove:
Well everyone..... problem solved. Looks like I had my first bad tank of gas. I went to the Sunoco and put in 8 gallons of 100 octane(@7.99/gallon) and I haven't heard a knock since. Amazing..... well, either it was a bad tank or the 100 octane just disguised a detonation problem I may have. I'm leaning towards the bad gas since I have been running this tune for so long with no issues.
I am thinking bad gas as well. Coming from a former C-Store manager, it does happen. Glad you discovered this and was not a huge issue.
Hopefully that's all that it was but to get 2 bad tanks from the same place should warrant a little conversation with the station manager they may have a problem they are not aware of.
I'm gonna write an email to the company. They have a guarantee that if their fuel causes any damage to your car, they'll pay for the damages. I'm hoping they'll reimburse my fill up. I've been running their gas for YEARS with no issues. I always keep my receipts too. It's all in how you write the letter. I'm glad it was this. Esp. since I'm heading to the track tomorrow night with the lowest temps yet since I've had my cam in. I ran my 12.70 in mid 80's and it's supposed to be mid 60's tomorrow night. HELL YEAH!! AND, I've got 1/2 tank of 100. Hopefully I can make it down there with it but I have a feeling I'll have to throw 3 gallons of 93 in it. I can always throw some more in it when I get there too.
Add in a can of NOS brand octane boost before you fuel up for the track. Then add the 93 octane fuel you need (so it mixes well DAVE) and you should be good to go...Get the NOS brand, it is one of the best out that actually does what it says.
