didn't think about this.... So let's just assume I have something for sale in the f/s section and I get an offer from someone I don't know. What's the best way to exhange the item for the payment?
If its someone you don't know at all, then I'd suggest postal money order or paypal. Either way, the buyer waits for funds to clear before the item is shipped.
Paypal, Money order, Or Certified bank check....and agreed that you wait for money to clear.... Or cash is good to....
Actually I don't think Paypal offers a whole lot of protection for the buyer outside of eBay auctions. I guess for the seller you know you got your money right?
Certified's can be forged. I know of a couple of incidents where people lost big time. I think there was a Charger recently, and my brother lost a pickup. Meet at the bank a cash it before turning over title and keys.
Well, we're not talking car here, but you're right on the certified checks. Protection on those isn't much different than a regular check. I guess the difference is that the bank shows the cash in your account immediately and then it takes days (a week?) for the certified check to bounce/go bad at the originating bank and you lose.
What if someone pays with paypal and funds it with their credit card. Do I get charged the 3% fee or something? is that only for business accounts? how does that work? I know if they fund the payment with their bank account (checking/savings) there isn't any fee involved.
It can go either way. Typically, with a purchase the seller will get charged the 3%. If you go under the personal tab, there are options for the sender to pay the fee. So either charge him 3% for paypal, or have him pay the fee on top of your price.
Ummm, not sure if you caught that. With a forged cashier's/certified check the money CAN appear to be in your account... then some time later the money will be taken out of your account or they will come after you if you've withdrawn it already. I *think* you actually have to keep calling the bank to find out when it's actually cleared and done?
Normally forged certified checks can be verified before you even put it in the bank. When you get the check, call the back it was certified at and request to do an account verification. I have had fake checks sent to me when I was selling the mustang. The best one was basically something someone made on their home computer from a bank in Texas when they were from Maine or something hahaha
