Great riff, great chorus, new album for the first time in 14 years. All the original members except Layne Staley who died of a heroin/crack overdose in 2002. The guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote most of the music from the beginning so it's no wonder why they still sound so good. New album Sept 29th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLkCdGQU3lU
Alice in Chains is one of my favorites...bar none. So are the offshoot bands...they do a good job of being Alice in Chains...but just never quite hit the chord change of ol' red hair
I'm not saying they sound bad but Alice in chains died with Layne Staley. Its just not quite the same. Also there was a dynamics to Layne's voice that I have never heard duplicated (not that I've heard everyone out there) Just like Chris Cornell will never duplicate Sound Garden, he's just not as good by himself Some bands are only good due to the combination of members and not the result of just one of them.
Deff one of my all time favorite bands! I grew up on Alice, Soundgarden, Pearljam, Metallica, Primus, and Pantera to name a few I kinda agree with ya on that
I guess I must really be the "older generation" now....10 seconds of that was all i could stand...dang..:erm:
That's a profound statement considering he wrote none of the music and less than a third of the lyrics. I'm not blowing of his amazing sound, but one thing that made AIC sound good was the harmony between him and Jerry Cantrell. They've found someone who sounds eerily like Layne Staley. The band is the same, the songwriter (who I might add wrote most of their hits) is the same (Jerry Cantrell). Check out this video....great video and song: http://www.aliceinchains.com/content/?page_id=157 I'm with you on the nostalgic view point. But with the crappy music that's around right now (I'm aging myself by saying that. LOL) I think it's refreshing to have a quality sound out there. The band has paid their dues and just want to make some damn music again....that or be able to afford the good shit again! Hehe
Jt, that is like saying Dio SUCKED when he played with Black Sabbath, he did his job well. Yes, no one can replace Ozzy, but, ' Time Waits For No One', they both moved on & both did well, but, I do like Dio better with Rainbow. Cam ... Good Call (for US old fuckers)
Oh I completely see where you are coming from. It is almost impossible to define a band by anything other than the lead singer, regardless of if he wrote any of his songs. Though the replacement sounds very close to Layne, Layne for some reason was able to bring the message out in a very eery and sometimes disturbing fashion, not only because of his voice but how his moods effected the song deeply. IMHO there has only been one band that has had a change of lead singers that still rocks like they used to, AC/DC. Because of my Age I am one of the privileged that can be called a product of that era. (Grew up with AiC, PearlJam, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone(one album but listened to it waaaaaay too many times), Candle Box, and SoundGarden) I also would like to clarify that I do not HATE the new stuff, just have a hard time calling the Band Alice in chains. Even though Layne RARELY if at all wrote the songs, and near the end of his Career was doing MUCH LESS Vocals for the band.
