Or at least the front part to where I can get behind the area between the sunroof and the windshield?
If you're not taking it out, then its not too bad to drop. I've had mine down to try and fix a rattle.

Just the service manual. I'd be careful poking fun at Ralph if I were you. He can make your car rattle for a VERY long time, like permanently.
What do you mean "behind"? It was very very simple to pull down the front away from the windshield gasket enough to run wires between the roof and the headliner. I went up the A-pillar and over the headliner to get to the backside of my gauge in the sunglasses holder. If I remember correctly it was: Remove A-pillar trim Remove sun visor where it's screwed into the roof ... and I think that's it? Then you can just carefully pull down on the front of the headliner to get maybe an inch or two?? Jees, it was a long time ago.
Just need it pulled down far enough so I can have space to be able to cut the holes for the gauges. I'm putting them in front of the sunglass holder. (Between the holder and the sunroof). Looks like the sunglasses holder just pops out by pulling on it. It seems to be easier from the back (windshield side) but I didn't want to break any clips or anything.
I guess it depends on your cutting tool then. If you're using something like a tile knife, shouldn't be a problem. Dremel should be ok. Rotozip probably not. I'm assuming your going to cut from the front and not from behind? ...and have you ever cut any of that stuff before? It's a rather strange material. Sort of cuts like soft plastic. Very hard to cut with a knife, easy to melt it and damned near impossible to get a smooth edge with a power tool. Hopefully your gauge or gauge holder will overlap the hole edges on the front side?
Do you really want to put it back of the sunglasses holder? You're going to be looking straight up at the roof. and as tall as you are... You might as will put a quick disconnect on the cable and just glue the gauge to your forehead.
LOL!!! Ya, I hear ya on that one. I temp pasted fake gauges and drove around and they seemed to work OK. The only downfall is if I ever want to remove everything and sell the car, I would have to buy a new headliner which I'm sure is not cheap. Heck, I'll probably never sell it for a while though. I was actually going to put them in the sunglasses holder door, that way all I had to replace was he plastic door, but I like the location in the headliner better, plus I use the sunglasses holder all the time. And ya, I've cut all kinds of stuff like this type material and my garage is full of cool Man Tools so I can really mess things up....Lol!
No need to hurt the sunglass holder. At most you need to cut a hole/slot in the back big enough for the cable when the holder is open. This holder is fully functional (well, it doesn't hold anything any more) so the door opens and closes and catches normally with the gauge(s) in there. There's room for 2 52mm standard gauges.
Yep, me too. but only about the top half of the rearview for me and I figured that when I was using the gauge I wasn't too worried about the rear veiw.... Don't use it now that I also have it run into the DashDAQ. I think gauge pods on the headliner would look pretty good. I'm thinking brightness might be an issue. You might be wanting that to be easily adjustable. and then sometimes you might want it brighter than others. Adjustable on the gauge face or with a remote would be ideal.
