There was bound to be a little bad... So I get all prepped for the day at Atco and make my first pass. Wasn't bad @ 11.89 on a hundred shot. Come back around to try an N/A run and pull into the water box and stab the throttle to spin em up real quick and roll out. Waiting to do the burn and I hear a knocking for a bit and the idle fades down and the car stalls. Crank it once, won't start.. again and she fires and everything sounds OK. Make the pass and it wasn't bad, 12.58. Go back in the lanes and Doug(PACharger) and Chris(hemi~c) come over and say they heard a knock and was everything alright? Checked her over again and everything looked good and the logs showed nothing out of the place so decided to make another. Ran 12.59 but when I was coming down the return lane she was popping like crazy under even throttle in second gear. Pull her back into the pits to let her cool down and start pulling a plug out of each hole and when #5 comes out... (You can partially see the shiney spot from where what is presumed a piece of ring land hit) Put 2 fresh plugs in and she seems to be running OK but that was it for the day. Managed to limp her home by tagging along with Erik and Wendy (thanks you two ) until the 287/84 split and motored the rest of the way. Picking up a borescope this week to take a peek inside and will be looking around at options for the next bullet to put in (vendors, send me your best deals). Can't say I'm upset about it, after all she has over 88K miles and over 200 passes and just quickened the process as I was going to refresh at 100K miles anyways.
damn Dave. Glad you were able to get home though... Looks like the piston slapped the top, rather than a ring land letting lose. Maybe an over rev? Any codes?
Nope.. no codes. I thought slap too but one plug has impressions on and the edge is smushed over. Getting a borescope to take a peek inside before I put a another piston in to keep it safe until the new bullet is done. Got home safe and sound and drove it to work today (only wheels I got). Yeah.. an expensive 3 passes.
wow..... sorry to hear, but i wonder if in fact a ring land let loose...... did not think you would be able to drive it afterwards!
There's been a few that have been able to drive. First one that comes to mind is BrilliantBlackHemi, he drove his from Englishtown to VA and then up to BFNY.
interesting..... i always figured of the top of the piston decides to shit the bed, the resulting pieces caused even more issues with the heads, etc.
Hopefully it's because of some good luck for a change. I'll know more tomorrow as the borescope gets here as well as the other stuff to throw a different piston in this weekend.
Down the scope with my cell phone.. But decided it was best not to tackle this as yet.. Will get a timeframe on when I can get a replacement in and decide from there if I'll have Erik and myself tackle putting another piston in. Just wasn't set up to do it this weekend if there were any problems.
