awesome stuff here jon!!!! only issue for me is that my tank has a biult in overflow for the wet/dry filter right in the middle of the back of the tank. it is not flat!!!
Awesome! Thanks for the information Chris! I was undecided on getting one but definately now I will invest in one. Is there any you recommend? I know there are a few on the market and I've skimmed through some but really don't know which ones I truly benefit from with this tank. Thanks Kym! These crabs can't escape... atleast not anymore lol. They try everyday. Especially when the lunar lights kick on they are more active in trying to escape. Its fun watching them try. I changed the tank setup because one was at the top of the tank and almost escaped the first day we had them in there.
Nice tank. I will get pix and a video of mine up soon. I am new to the fish tank thing but am having a lot of fun with it. I only have room for a 55 gallon corner tank right now but a 180+ will be a must once i have room! I have a gold fish i got for $2.99 and he is 3 times his size in a few months. and a fresh water Hystrix Stingray. I am getting a Silver Arowana as soon as i move in a few weeks and get the tank to the new place with the ray safely.
If you've never raised a silver arowana, you'll usually get them as tiny little things. At this age, they need relatively calm water surfaces. I used to thaw out brine shrimp and gently float a few of them in front of the baby monster so it was easy for it to see/grab the food. Believe it or not, IMO, later on, this allowed me to hand feed my 2 foot arowana, as he was used to close-contact feedings with me. Looking back, I'd stay away from goldfish as feeder food. Maybe as a treat every now and then. I'd stick primarily with prepared foods, such as pellets, with the occasional shrimp, etc. My brother used this diet and his arowana reached about 3 feet long... and super wide (tall). So big in fact, that when his arowana would pump water through his mouth, it literally created a little jet of water that'd break the surface... almost like a drinking fountain effect!
Yeah there is a place here in town that has 3 of them for sale that are about 8 inches long but i don't want one that big to start. most of the fun is to watch them grow up i just want a 1.5 inch guy at first.
Yes, if you have a school of them. I asked the same question to the guy I dealt with for most of my supplies and fish. If they were going to get attacked, abused, or even eaten I wouldn't have bought them. The only semi-aggressive fish in there would be the Convicts. The two Convicts don't even bother the Tiger Barbs. The other Cichlids are friendly. The crabs don't bother them. The eel can careless. They were all introduced to the tank around the same time that way the potential for any conflict was decreased.
good advice!!!! i used to feed my oscars and arrowana's gold fish...... fish became too aggressive and i introduced more parasites and diseases into my tanks that way!!! those goldfish are dirty little buggers!!! lol
If he gets an arowana, nothing smaller than its mouth will survive. Not only the diseases, but arowanas are prone to get what is termed 'buldging eyes' (forgot the REAL name for it)... but it is hypothesized that feeding arowana's goldfish contributes to this problem, as goldfish are very fatty as far as fish is concerned. What would happen is that the arowana's eyes buldge at the top of the eye, forcing them to look down constantly... thus hampering their lifestyle as they are a surface dweller. They can also get some kind of gill problem as well. Like I said, I'd stick to the diet I mentioned above. ***what's soo cool about arowana's, is that they curl up before striking at their prey, like a snake almost... the first time your little baby arowana does this, it'll make your heart palpatate... so cute!
