Expect a full DIY article on this soon, but here's a quick preview of the new radar detector mount installed: The mount was purchased from RadarBusters.com. Model # HGS014. About $70. w/shipping. It's originally designed for a motorcycle handlebar, but I figured out a little trick to get it to mount to the double ball adjustment cylinder of our rear view mirrors. There are a few benefits to this type of install- - RD is mounted very high, giving great coverage. - The RD is *above* the rear view mirror, not blocking any more of the driver's vision. - Less likely to be seen by thieves as they scout for easy prey. - About 12,983x more secure than suction cups. I'm very happy with the product and it's quality, but the mounting plate doesn't quite work for this application. I will fabricate something for the Bel later this week that will look (and work) a little better than the 'mount-all' plate that came with the unit. The unit comes with nice shiny silver stainless steel screws, but in keeping with the black theme of the truck, those might get swapped out. Once the hard wire is in place, I'll get the DIY up.
You have to take into account the angle of the photo. When was the last time you stuck your head up there to see the back of the mirror? In our trucks the mirror is very high and out of the way of the drivers view. That is why Kevan put it there. This mount is very trick and high quality. Like kevan said it is 100000X better than the suction cups and it does not hang down under the merrior. Also the plate that stickes out behing the radar about an inch will be gone whith the new mounting that kevan is talking about. so that will help with the *clutter*
Hmmm...I think the 'cluttered' thing is caused by the inability to get a decent shot. Damn windshield! I should just take it out and get some decent pics..... The new mounting plate will clean it up too. In the pic above, only about 20% of their plate is used (and it still holds the RD rock-solid). The wiring that's up there is OEM stuff: auto-dimming mirror power and factory UConnect handsfree control cable. The 'phone cord' for RD power is the only other thing up there. The CountryJoy RD mount is cool and all, BUT....it's under-slung below the rearview mirror, and that hinders driver's vision. I'm not into that.
