Every time I empty my catch can there is a small amount of metalic residue left at the bottom. Has anyone else noticed this? Seems as though I'm getting premature wear for some reason.

You might want to send a sample of your oil out for diagnostics.

PM NYCSRTATE Tony where he sends his out to.

You can also take it into a Catipiller Dealer they can do it for you.

I highly recommend them. You should be sending them a sample every oil change to keep tabs on things. If you pre-pay for 6 kits you get a couple dollars off each. It's just a bit over $20 per sample anyway. They'll have the analysis done in a day or two after they get the sample and you can get it on the web, emailed, regular mail or all the above.

Like Sarge said. If you can see the metal residue with your eyes that's pretty bad. Indicates there's some pretty severe wear going on.

But... in your catch can??? There shouldn't be much of anything coming up the tube out of the PCV valve except vapors. Well, mostly all vapor and maybe some very teeny tiny droplets. Kind of hard to carry metal residue with that. Don't want to be an alarmist but I'd find out what's going on as soon as possible.

How about pics? In the can and then get some on your finger and spread it on something where it shows up well.

I think soot particles or granules are normal...but tiny shiny metal shavings...I hope not. Could be coming out of the filtering media which looks like steel wool...

    Good luck.

Another thing you want to do is pull some oil straight from the oil pan. See if you have any shavings there.

As EricG stated, these particles may be from the filter in the catch can.

Also, if you send oil samples, do not use the oil from the catch can, use it from the oil pan directly.

Great advise, send it to Blackstone, they will tell you exactly what that is and tell them what your finding in the catch can.

Take your filter and cut it open! Then see whats going on inside. If you dont see shavings then i would not worry to much about it but ill look into it at the least.

i am with dave on this..... i can not imagine that actual metal shavings could manage to get themselves that far up into the vent system??? would imagine that any shavings would be caught by the filter first. check that and go from there. could be residue from the manifold or something else.....

Isn't the filter itself made of some sort of mesh/metal could it be falling apart?

What I'm finding isnt shavings, it's fine as flour. just a small amount. enough to rub between your fingers. It is the same thing I used to get on cars where I used a magnetic drain plug, only more.

No. Not unless you bought it at K-mart. The ones that have a "mesh" filter it's made from stainless. Won't disintegrate.

Still would be unusual that it made it into the can. I'm guessing it's something that's liquid/vapor when it gets to the can and then solidifies or turns into particles in the can.

You have sent your oil sample in for analysis already right?
