I need to add another mount in the car and probably replace an existing one so I'm looking at in-car device mounting solutions again.

We're talking Treo phone (skinned) and a scan tool. I'm considering moving my treo up from the console mount I have now to the passenger side of the Nav. The scan tool is probaby going to have to go on the top of the dash right next to the A-pillar.

It's got to be removeable (the mount). Semi-permanent is OK but it would have to be something really outstanding to drill holes or screws and then figure in the cost of eventually replacing the piece it's mounted on. For one existing mount I tried the semi-permanent 3M mounting tape on the dash. That lasted all of a day and came off. Then I tried the permanent 3M mounting tape. That lasted a few days and came off. What actually worked was the 3M mounting putty but it doesn't look so good and tends to flatten out over months and squeeze out from under the edges in serious heat.

Anybody have opinions on the 3 below? Any other suggestions? I like the modular solutions where you select a mount part for the car and then it works with various device attachment parts.

Those generic ones that hang on the louvres of the air vents look like a bad idea. First of all it can't be that solid of a mount because the louvres aren't that substantial. And then it blocks the vent. I think the only vent I would be willing to sacrifice is the horizontal one on the top corner of the dash that's for defrosting the side window.

Suction cup mounts are a non-starter.

ProClip - nice stuff. Clip-in types of mounts. Look good with minimal damage/deformation of contact areas. Most of the clip-in solutions go into some crevice where hard parts meet soft parts so it will leave a slight indentation in the soft part. Very well made but not indestructible. For example I keep tightening the screw for more resistance in the swivel adapter and now the cup part of the joint has a crack in it. They got lots of other stuff but this is the vehicle specific.

Arkon - looks like good stuff? Looks a bit clunky with prominent thumb knobs for tightening the joints. I suppose I could live with that if it's as heavy duty as it looks. Looks like they sell there stuff as complete mounts instead of modular. Also looks like they're primarily into suction cup mounts. They do have some adhesive solutions like at the bottom of this page.

Bracketron - I was looking at one they have that goes in the crevice between the Nav bezel and the dash -- and attaches to a screw behind there. That looks like a good idea. Never heard of Bracketron though.

what to do? (I can't afford to drive to Ohio to have Kevan fabricate anything right now)

    Heh heh...thanks for the compliment.
And get ready for a new radar detector mount! :D

I've been to all of those sites before, and ended up using a $9.99 phone holder from Walmart (bent a little wider to fit my M600i, but not modified). NO ONE makes a 'holster' for my phone, which is kind of ironic consider it's the same one James Bond uses. :)

It's just as bad for the iPod Touch. 22,739 skins and bullsh!t accessories for it, but NO in-car holder for it.
STOP- the iPhone is 2x as thick as the iPod Touch, so those mounts don't work.

I didn't think I had obscure gear, but.....

Nice. It's primarily the mount/pedestal I'm looking for. And an AMPS-4 pattern (or with adaptors to get there). I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to try an adhesive mount on the top left edge of the dash. Even though I suspect it's going to come loose after a little while. After that, plan B would be to the right edge of the NAV unit.

    Plan A Pros:
easy reach to the touch screen
viewing angle is just a few degrees from looking straight out the windshield, almost the same level and ambient light leve would be the same.
excellent cable routing to the unit
    Plan A Cons:
Decent size screen visible from outside of the car (especially at night).

    Plan B Pros:
Screen basically out of view from outside of car.
    Screen is still reachable.
    Plan B Cons:
Screen not within peripheral vision while driving and change in ambient light level when looking from through windshield to screen.
Cable routing options to device basically suck (without drilling a major interior panel).

Well, what's nice about those handlebar mounts is that the "ring" can be removed.
Then, with 1 screw, it could be attached to a mount plate on the dash.

I think a combination of 2 products might be the way to go.

Everything I'm considering at the moment involves components from 2 or more manufacturers. Anodized aircraft aluminum would be very very nice.

It IS very interesting to see that Brackton has mounts designed for the LX platform.
