Well Rick remember most prices even discounted ones are for short blocks...you still need heads/cam/intake/tune/labor...i could go on but "I know, that you know, that I know"
I've been in a couple of HHP 426 stroker cars and there's nothing like the sound of a 426 idling. At WOT, the constant pull is just awesome!!! Price wise, I think HHP's stroker package is pretty expensive so you might want to go with PPP, unless you have someone that can put it all together for ya. HHP's 426 shortblocks I believe are pretty close in price to PPP.
We'll see what happens. John enlightened me on the labor, tuning, and hidden costs of "swapping" a 6.1 to a 7.0. I need a good dose of reality every now and then. I'm so fucking confused on what to do that I might just trade the fucker in on a used EVO 9 and throw a grand in it and call it a day....not really, but it is tempting. Throwing a big power adder on a 43k mile engine is beginning to get me down trying to figure out what to do. I've yet to drive/ride in a centrifugal sc'd car that I feel would be worth the money. No roots are out yet and am not sure if they'll be safe. a 426 would be great but may be a bit out of my price range. No one seems to think too highly of a H/C/I combo....except Milan and Cam ( I respect both opinions btw). I think a twin screw IS what I'm looking for but not on a 40k mile non forged motor. I think I need to throw some 22" rims, a killer sound system, paint job, and a remote start and be done with it! LOL I hate being this indecisive, but being in the Navy I don't come along large chunks of money that often!
ricker...i think for what your looking for the TS is the best option (as i said with the install issues associated with the 426) i dont think you ever really got a good 100% answer (at least not on the forums) for what it REALLY takes to forge the engine.... but i would be most interested in the transmission stuff as that will seem to be your issue when you get up to the high HP ranges regardless of HOW you get there
Rick, Get the Evo as a second daily driver and then Buy a blower for the charger who's mileage won't become excessive. Get a twin screw keep the boost moderate and use a safe tune until you forge. Tell Tish I approve of this plan. If all else fails, just go the blower route I described... There's already too many of us with Vortech's anyway! Just be sure it isn't a blower from a company who's name rhymes with Geezusem.
Jury is still out on that right? Dig up JMatt's most wonderful thread on that. Not sure what HP/TQ he was finally putting to the ground but his transmission looked as close to new as possible when he tore it down. No doubt there have been transmission failures with big HP but I'm interested in why JMatt's was different than theirs. I think he was up in the same HP/TQ range? Maybe not. Remember JMatt's secret break through was maintaining the hp of the initial shot with staged larger shots as the rpm went up. So maybe it wasn't as much HP as the transmission failures but still made 10's becayse it was constant? Rick, do you even know what your HP objective is? Lol, didn't mean to throw another thing in there to think about  but you should have that settled before you start. And don't get depressed or overwhelmed. I'm guessing if you keep up the investigation you're doing now for a solid 4 months or so you'll know exactly what you want to do. It'll be worth it too since it will match your expectations 100%.
aah get a 426 stroker.... then if you want to add a SC/turbo you can. Just keep in the back of your mind that as you get closer to that 550+ RWHP your pushing the envelope with the transmission and you will eventually need to beef that up as well.
you sure as hell know more than i do so if you say so then i am happy to go with you on that.... the only concern i had was....JMatt was the king of the drag strip....the ricker is gonna beat the crap outa that tranny on the road course hahahaha....i would think with the more vicious nature of ricks driving that it might be more of a question...but theres only one way to find out :thumb2: hahaha
I would love to get a 426. I just don't know if I can afford it....all of it! I would love your exact setup. I just need someone to tell me what the final payment was including tuning. I'm going to be gone 9 out of 12 months the next three years of my life and want to drive the car the three months I'm home.
That's a good question. My assumption is that you can't get any more vicious than the drag strip in the context of overpowering your transmission. On the track you're probably not hitting max torque much of the time. Cooling, etc., is a whole different story. I didn't really say anything above (haha, usually the case) other than JMatt's transmission looked new. He just might not have been hitting those kind of max torque numbers (results due to holding the torque up there through the whole rpm range). I do think Rick has a good idea of his application and how he wants the car to behave but I don't get the impression he has a firm target in mind for "how much". Seems to me the alternatives don't share any common ground. You have to commit to going one way from the start. You want to make sure the direction you pick is going to get you where you want to go. Your power objective is going to be a major factor if not the main one. Sounds like we have a good idea of all the immediate alternatives that fall within the budget now so maybe it's time to fix a target HP and TQ? (no... "MORE POWER" isn't going to cut it). Rick?
Let me start by saying I don't give a shit about God damned "peak" marketing HP! I would trade 500 at the wheels for 475 at the wheels if it gave it to me early in the rpm range. I would rather have the ability to drift an entire road course (fun) than do a run down a drag strip (boring). So I guess 500 rwhp with a similar torque number is my target number.
which if i am not mistaken is exactly the purpose of a TS SC lol.... i really think that forging the motor and throwing one of those babys on is your best bet...i know you want the 426 but the TS will go on much easier
Another option that has not been mentioned...would be to Forge the 6.1L...not do a stroker and then add a Supercharger/Turbo...this would probably be much more within your projected price target and kill both birds with one stone. Parts for Forging the 6.1L should cost alot less than the machine work involved for a stroked block, crank and pistons and rods for a 392 or 426. Instead you would be replacing pistons and rods with beefed up components, and pistons designed for lower compression and boost. Just a thought.
I would love to forge the bottom end and throw a blower on it. I just haven't seen anywhere that forging is a easy option other than swapping to a 392 or 426. Does anyone offer any forging kits for the 6.1? Also, around what would the labor cost for the forging? My local consultants/advisers/installers are great and wouldn't want to burn any bridges with this project! LOL
