ok now that I have your attention... Alot of us tend to over look some design problems until they present themselves.... Check the weather stripping at the top of the hatch! 05 R/T 06 SRT8 Its a simple replacement held on with about 6 acorn nuts. Im thinking that when mine gets redone IM also going to use some double sided tape along the back.
Eh, I'm not sure that really does anything. I think it's there more for aerodynamics to cut wind noise maybe. Those don't really seal and they don't go all the way to the sides or around. It's designed so water is channeled around the sides and out holes at the bottom of the door right?
That would be correct sir. HOWEVER, mine leaks, everytime I wash it I get water inside so something's not working right.
Ummm, did you remove the tape from over the drain holes? They tape those for shipping. Haha, that would be down at the bottom though. Maanny washes and I actually had to drive it the couple of times it rained here last couple of years. No leaks.
It rains a little more often here in floriDUH and my 05 leaks, the 06 hasn't started leaking yet. Not to mention it just looks like crap!
Oh man, if I'm THAT stupid you can come right over and shot me dead on the spot Dave!! I gotta check when I get home ... oh God PLEASE don't make me that stupid, lol! :bag:
Ok, this is a dumb question but Dave, where are the drain holes?? I don't see any tape anywhere in there so I'm confused. I did check my wheatherstipping and it's fine, looks practically brand new, so that's not where I'm getting the water leak from. It does seem to come from the top somewhere tho.
My weather stripping looks like crap. But I don't think it's there to keep out water. I think it's just to cut down on debris collecting in there like leaves and dirt (and possibly for wind noise). It doesn't even make it to the edges across the top. Here are the drains in the bottom of the hatch. Mine were taped for shipping. Notice that the weather strip certainly isn't designed to be any kind of water tight seal and it doesn't even extend all the way across to the edges.
Ok, ON the hatch, I was looking on the car. Thanks Mr. Wizard. So where do you think my water leak is from if not from that top seal?? Whenever I wash the car I get water dripping in at the top center, comes down in a couple lines (not just a drip or two) and right onto the rear seat and sub (I put towels down before I wash). It's there BEFORE I open the hatch too so IDK, gotta be coming in around that top seal somewhere right? You never had any leaks??? BTW, I see your "lovely" gravelly road, nice! Stupid city.
I've never had any leaks. Thats NOT a seal on the top there. There is a huge channel for water. That weather strip is just to keep debris from collecting. It's like the screens you put over your gutters to keep the leaves out. If you have streams or significant drips then it's not going to be the holes in the hatch itself. Those are for possible water and mostly just to breath to handle condensation. I'm guessing it's likely your leak is at the grommets for the wiring harness? I suppose it's possible where the hinges are attached but unlikely. Maybe this will help for where the water is supposed to go.
Yea, I'm kinda confused on how it's gettin in since that chanel is so deep that you wouldn't think water would overflow there. I'll take a look at those other spots you said when I get home. Thanx again Dave!!:flowers:
Is the gasket that seals against the door good? You should be able to see any bad places by carefully inspecting the door where the gasket contacts it. (and, no, not the little weather strip.... The fat door gasket that goes all the way around the hatch opening).
Yea, it looks brand new, along with that rubber gasket/flap piece across the top that Jon originally posted about. Also those rubber grommets and tubes at the top of the hatch look brand new and the seal around the nav ant looks good too. IDK. I'm gonna pay close attention next time I wash it to see if I can find the source of the water and if that doesn't work I guess I'll just have to pay a visit on Mr. Wizard for help, lol!
