I did some reaserch on the best price.. Moe's Performance = $1,495. Quaife in the UK (Where they are actually located) is selling the LSD for the SRT8 for 675 euros = $1,044. Don't know about shipping costs from UK, but it can't be that bad. http://www.quaife.co.uk/shop_category.cfm/category_id/1274/category_id/1274
Thanks for looking it up Nathan. I'll be definitely referring back to this thread in November when I'm ready to put it on.
GSM is $1,495.00 also http://www.gsmotorsports.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Q48309&Category_Code=
. . I have already sent them an email about shipping to US. Will let y'all know when I hear back. Sorry..... I didn't even check GSM because I thought they were at $1,795. I do know at one time they were at that price.. Nothing negative at all, I am not partial to who I buy from.....they just should be competitively low in cost (as part of my job I order about 10 million a year in industrial controls equipment, so by habit I search/negotiate lowest price when I purchase). Some times I will pay a little more just for a reputable and knowledgable company. GSM has never done me wrong at all. But you have to admit....that UK price is getting down to where the cost should be compared to LSDs for straight axles differentials.
GSM's price has always been $1,495.00. That's what I paid 2 years ago. No problem Nathan. GSM has never done me wrong on anything either. Just wanted to let everyone know they had the same price.
What do you guys really think about this rear end? Ron, do you have one or does it/would it make your car hook up better? As I see it the stock rear isn't perfect but it does work. It's all in wheel spin sensors, PCM and brakes. Before my 426 I could NOT spin in 2nd gear...the car would bog after a spinning 1st gear shift. After my 426, it does NOT matter if I have traction control on or off...the car just rips through first and into second spinning and on into third...wooooota! Would a Quaife matter? If it does, I would like to have it installed when I do my shafts. BTW, I sawed the end of my finger to the bone with a cheap steak knife cutting this box open...I rock.
Our cars have open differentials with rear traction controlled by PCM. With the Quaife, the rear tells the PCM what it is going to do, give traction to both rear wheels. And you will never see peg-leg (1 tire only) burnouts, or burnouts where it looks like one triee was doing more work than the other. If you use the Prdator and completely turn off ESP you will get 1 tire burnouts all day long without a LSD. Quaife = best equal traction possible in our cars today.
Nathan, How does the rear-end "tell" the PCM what it is going to do? I don't think this happens but I may be wrong. The PCM watches a few things with the rear wheels and applies brakes appropriately. Jon
I believe the PCM comunicates thru the wheel sensors to see what traction is doing and will apply the brakes to control traction and this is known as BAS. In a braking situation ABS works with BAS to help keep you straight on the road and not sliding or slipping the tires.
The PCM monitors axle/wheel rotation (all 4 corners) and transmission output. Comparing these it figures out the traction situation. For lateral slip it also monitors steering angle, speed, yaw and/or g-force. With ESP full on it will apply brakes to individual wheels and possibly cut power to maintain control. With ESP half off it will allow straight line spin (burnouts). Additionally it relaxes the intervention threshold and the amount of intervention for lateral control. With ESP full off it will disable everything except ABS. I believe Jeeps are the same. i think.
That sounds like what the SRT guys said. For straight line acceleration a single push of the ESP button is the same as the push-and-hold. I still am on the fence about the Quaife.
I like to call it: ESP Full ON ESP Stage 1 (ESP short button press) ESP Stage 2 (ESP long button press) I believe in street tests that have been done and in conversation with SRT Engineers. ESP "Stage 2" (long press) it was determined that ESP was still slightly active, more like 75% disabled. If ESP is full off, BAS or Torque Management must still be doing something. Have you tried the ESP off mode in the Predator? There is a big diff between ESP "Stage 2" and ESP off with Predator.
Hmmm....I haven't tried it. But, I "thought" I remembered looking for it in version 9r04 and didn't see the option. I'll go back and look for it!
It turns off everything. ESPand BAS lights come on, and ABS light also. Now you will get more peg leg burnouts.
I remember one of the SRT chats where they described it as ~80% disabled and upon further questioning the remaining 20% was ABS. The Predator already has ESP off to some extent in the canned tunes. I asked a couple of times but Diablo didn't say exactly how much of what was disabled. (You didn't notice you can light up the rear tires?) I sort of tried the lateral control one time when it was a little damp. Getting on an on ramp I broke the back end loose and let it swing out to about 30*. No intervention. So I figured maybe it was because it was damp and we weren't generating enough g-force so I stayed in it and swung the back end all the way the other way (more than a 45* angle). No intervention. I gave up at that point since we weren't making much progress up the ramp and my passenger was getting a little tense. Do not disable ESP in the Predator menu. That's intended for use when on a dyno. It does disable ABS and it has a tendency to put some cars in limp mode.
