Ok guys, I'm gonna ask a stupid question cause I'm really getting confused on this whole catch can thing. What exactly does this do, I know it catches oil but how/why, and what's the benefits? Also looking at the pics here I thought the catch can goes on the other side of the engine, in the breather hose that runs between the oil neck filler and the intake tube to catch exess oil. I'm a litte confused now.

Ya... you'll be glad you did. Sometimes you don't get a whole lot, but if you drive it like you stole it once in a while, you'll be glad you have it.

BT is a good choice. Very easy to install. Takes about five minutes. I've even seen a couple of mods with custom brackets for different locations.

This is on the PCV valve side. Oil vapors, blow by gasses etc. are sucked into the manifold to be burned (Positive Crank case Ventilation). So the catch can has baffles, filter material to allow the vapors to condense on, and a resevoir to catch the condensed oil and stuff. Here is a good pic of how it can work. Different catch cans are designed differently. (Some are just an empty can and not worth it).

    http://www.mckinneyraceworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=80

It seems some engines are prone to generating more vapors than others. Ours is one of them. Many have removed their intake manifolds to find some oil in them -- like oil wet surfaces so it's evident that there is enough that it can condense a bit in the manifold. Assumably there is some effect on A/F, burning oil, etc. but it's unclear if this is significant (might not be really bad but it can't be a good thing). So these will alleviate the amount of oil vapors getting returned to the intake manifold by condensing some or most of it out.

On the other side there is a vent from the filler tube to the air intake. I forgot the conditions but it's possible for the engine to "burp" liquid oil up the filler tube. This is to take care of that. Some put a mini filter there and remove the hose to the air intake but that's an emmissions no-no (so are the catch cans since they aren't approved -- at least here in CA). I vaguely remember that the burp is possible in situations like when you go instantly from WOT to closed throttle and there is an instant reversal in vacuum.

Thanks Quick, I get it now, thank you! So do you have one, is it worth getting here in CA where we're gonna have to remove it later for the dreaded smog check??

Wouldn't think it would have anything to deal with the smog check...

That doesn't seem to stop them! Soon we won't even be able to open our hoods anymore the rate things are going.

Alright Stevo, you got me, that's one area you can rub it in! Being as my car is new and I don't have to smog it for 6 years and currently it's 65 degrees without a cloud in sight (or rain), I'll take it! :dancing:

No shiat huh, damn smog nazis!!! Probably take a trained eye to spot them though so you'll probably be good, I'd be more worried about the emissions output with them on though.

That's cause Flo is one of those skinny azz states, all your smog just blows out to sea you lucky bastardos!!! To Cuba I guess, lol!! We got the Hitlers to monitor us here cause our stuff blows out over the rest of the country. Actually I read somewhere that they're now saying something like 10-20% of our smog comes from China!! Oh geez. :bottom:

Ya, saw a clip on the news about portable smog sniffing stations that can be set up almost anywhere and can somehow pick up excess polutants from your vehicle that aren't within code. Going to have to start carrying the bat around again and having the kid work on his swing! Lol!

The smog check is not an issue. Just keep your stock hose that goes from PCV to manifold. If you go for a smog check (in 3 years?) just pull off the catch can hoses from the pcv valve end and the manifold end and push on the stock one. No need to remove anything. I made my own hoses (bulk hose available at Napa) and the way it worked out there wasn't any need for clamps. (don't laugh at homemade bracket...)

Forget the bat, I'm calling a tow truck... hope they have GPS so they can find out where I dropped it off a cliff into the ocean. I just bolted on my AZ plate at lunch. DMV, ARB, CARB... burn in HELL. :guns:

So I'm not totally off topic... has anyone came up with a good "S" tube or anything coming off the PCV valve?

Very nice burnout and I check mine every 1500 miles just cause I drive like a racer on a daily bases. 80 to 100 mph on the frwy and 50 to 60 on the streets.

Same here, most of the time it is starting to look a little "ugly" in there. Might not hurt, but I worry about extra particles being in the oil.

What? don't do that... We're talking tablespoons every 500 to 1000 miles. Just dump it... wait, don't do that either. Get an empty oil container and save it. Keep track of your mileage. Then we can get some data on how much is collected over a few thousand miles.

(and besides, how are you going to get it back in the engine? Most of it would end up on the side of the funnel.)

Has anyone brought up the excess oil topic in one of the SRT chat sessions? or should I say, have the engineers side stepped any questions about it.
