What all does it take to forge the bottom end and get a lower compression rate so I can eventually add a lot of boost to whichever twin screw blower I decide to get? Also, do any vendors offer "forging" packages and how much can I expect to pay for the forging? :stretcher:
A 6.1 already has a forged crankshaft. All you would need are low compression forged pistons and a good set of connecting rod's.
HHP offers a 6.1 forged lower end that they will have the pistons made to what ever spec you'd like. Hemi31 has one. That short block is roughly 3500 I think. But I have a more important question for you Rick. I was gonna reply in the camshaft thread and though I'd ask ya here first. Sorry for the hijack. Man, what are your plans for your ride. What do you want?. I read in the other thread you wanted a great daily driver with great midrange and didn't care about absolute top end numbers. So here is something to consider. Strokers are great for making torque and with the proper camshaft will net you a nice daily driver that can be a beast on the track. But with FI, you can benefit from the stock rod ratio, leave the block intact as per it's original design (there's a lot to be said about this) and make up for it with boost. What the hell do ya want from your ride??.
I think Rick knows what he wants from an application level and doesn't know what would accomplish that. So... Rick, how about a very clear concise description of what you want your car to DO in the end. Then people like Cam et al can give you alternatives to accomplish that. Don't go at it ass backwards starting with the component of the day approach. For example I assumed that an all out road track car was the goal but you want some street racing drag capabilities as well. How much? I'm not sure.
I guess I should stop thinking out loud!!! LOL I just spoke with one of my best friends who's been a certified mechanic for 30 years and knows me probably better than anyone. I asked him the same question..."what the fuck do I want". He laid it out for me. I want something I can have fun with stop light to stop light, take to a road course occasionally and the mountain roads a lot. He recommended this: Blow off the forged bottom end and the H/C/I package Get Halfshafts, Quaife LSD, and 3.55 Gears this year Save my penny's for a twin screw blower and run it at 5.5 lbs of boost...period! after that...tinker with twistie mods (suspension, brakes) as time goes by I think thats pretty sound advice that won't put me in the hurt locker...or dog house...over the next two years. Thoughts???
Rick, make a valid assessment of where and what type of driving you'll be doing. How many track days do you plan in a season. If it isn't much, than a true street car is definitely better to go with. I think you'd also like drag racing though. Although not as difficult as road racing, the competitive aspect is definitely there and it is a lot of fun so don't dicount it. Your interests may change over time to include it. Too bad you guys have to wait 4 hrs and hang out forever just to sneak in a few heatsoaked runs through that 1320. And I hate the idea of 1/8th mile runs. Hate it lol.
Well, I agree wtih the idea for the quaife and the half shafts. The 3.55's are a waste IMO for a daily driver. You have to remember that it doesn't matter if you have the gears or not, your still trying to push a 4500lb car off the line and no matter what you do, traction is limited forcing/pushing that much mass X amount of distance in X amount of time. But that's a whole other thread. We'll have to get together at the track one day and I'll throw you the keys. I think you might change your mind about a H/C ride.
Thanks Cam! I'll definitely take you up on the offer. As you've probably figured out I am trying to narrow options for my price range down and am here for ALL discussion/persuasion...cause I just don't know what I don't know! WRT the gears: my buddy Scott was on the fence with that one as well....but it would be fun to ice skate on pavement!!!
