Anyone - What can I expect to notice as a result of TCM programming? In other words, I'm not a gear head so I'm unfamiliar with the different characteristics that TCM programming will afford.

One thing will be clutch lockup. Right now it seems it won't lockup until it's in 3rd somewhere? And you would be able to adjust torque management to suit your liking. You could set it so that shifts rattled your teeth or set it so they feel like a rubber band.

You should be able to change the axle ratio, reduce or eliminate torque management and perhaps increase line pressure for firmer and quicker shifts. The dreaded limp mode for high horse f/i rides may make some very happy as well. Of course, the PCM has to play nice as well.

I know one certain Jeep that could really use this software....Hell, I bet BJB would even drive it over to Mike W's house for a little work! ;-)

dave - do you think it would also eliminate / reduce the "lag" during intial tip-in of the accellerator??? one of the biggest complaints i have is the throttle lag, and "short shifting".......

I don't think tip-in has anything to do with the TCM programming? and I haven't heard any real cases of actual "short shifting". What do you mean by "short shifting"? If there is any sort of "short shifting" that would almost surely be in the PCM programming. My understanding is that it's the PCM that tells the TCM when to shift. The actual mechanics of the shift itself are handled by the TCM as well as other stuff like maybe clutch lockup. So it would go something like this:

PCM -> TCM : Initiate shift to 3rd gear
TCM -> PCM : Command received
    PCM : cuts throttle
TCM -> PCM : Command completed
    PCM : resumes throttle

Internally the TCM is controlling and monitoring the transmission. So like for clutch lockup it might do that when the input and output shafts are at particular rpms and it's in a particular gear, etc.

I think a stall converter and 90mm tbody would help here a whole bunch.

    TCM's

I installed a GSM TCM on my NA 6.1 before the Diablo was released. The increased line pressure made the shifts firmer and the dreaded 1-2 shift lag was GONE without getting the "Deathflash" from the dealer, as in, I can still hold gears in manual mode all day long. Then when I got the Diablo last October and raised the shiftpoints, the combo was amazing. With the raised line pressure and raised shiftpoints my car shifts like I wish it always had. During less than WOT the tranny shifts smoothly and feels very tame. At WOT the shifts (all at redline) are fast and strong, giving the neck snaps and tire chirps I wanted. In Cali with better air and lower elevation, it rips first, spins 2nd a bit, and chirps 3rd. Not bad for a "Sedan". All that is on newish Proxes 4's 275's. On worn out tires it's like Ice Capades = WHEEEEEEEE through the gears.

BTW: We did experiment with defeating the torque management of the TCM. With torque management removed on the TCM side (already have the ESP/Fan mod defeating TM on the PCM side) the car felt like it had been hit by a train on upshifts, TOTALLY UNDRIVEABLE.

Anyone in SoCal or AZ who wants to feel for themselves drop me an email at [email protected]

I have called Precision a few times on the lock up question and they keep telling me that the converters are not supposed to lock up at WOT and if it is trying to lock up something in the computer is trying to lock it up when it not supposed to.
Mine used to try to lock up in 3rd gear all last year, it felt like the brakes would come on for a second and after speaking to them I got the Mopar TCM and the problem was gone

    Wish I had more info....
TCM stuff is still in development.
We actually have a big power car (426/harrop blower, 10 psi) in the shop right now (something that should exhibit the same shifting issues as many of the other big power cars out there) so we can do some testing to find out where the major TCM shortcomings are.

    Thanks
    Mike
