I posted this on LX I figured I put it up here as well.......

Ed from LM Speed was good enough to send me one of his 90mm TB's to test on the road after I gave him a pretty hard time.......Kudos to Ed for that. This is as we know based on a GM LS2 unit and can be used on a stock manifold with an adapter or used with a fully ported intake with a new flange welded on.Ed sent me the adapter. My intake is opened to just a hair under 88mm so I expected to see some improvement.
Matt Robertson was good enough to send me his old Frankentake so I would have a full 4" CAI to test off of and I ordered a 4" elbow.....Thanks Matt!
Installing the LM TB is pretty straight forward....bolt the adapter to the intake manifold and bolt the TB to the adapter. The Pre-Production adapter I have needed a little coaxing as the bolt holes were off center just a hair, but I am told that has been addressed. Also the Pre-Production harness needed some creative wiring to interface with the factory plug as Ed is looking for the proper plug and will have them from what I am told.
Start the car....ummmmm,no.....start the car......ummmmm,no......start the car feather the thrattle to keep it running......ok...it's 50* here.....doesn't like cold starts at all!Get the car to 120* and idle smooths out....ok.......something to get used to.
Now on the road it was immediately evident the car was louder.....both in the intake and the exhaust note.......very nice! The throttle response was different than the stock TB.....I wouldn't say faster.....but different...........the tip in was much more brutal.....I would give it throttle like on the stock TB and light the tires off......ok....time to learn to drive the car again.Get on the main road and start cruising.....which is where I experienced surging and jerking as the adaptives went nuts!I drove 55mph 11 miles to the highway holding steady throttle.....the surging and jerking getting less intense but still there.Get on the Highway and hold 65mph....same thing....except now it had to learn a new rpm band did that cruise for 60miles and by the end of the run 65mph was very smooth....no more surging.Great I thought....until I got off the highway and discovered I needed to do that for every single rpm band. Now the good news is that there were absolutely no issues with limp mode!
The bad news is that I wouldn't suggest this as a direct bolt on with no tuning.I spoke to Ed today and he agrees. There is definitely more power....how much I cannot say(I will try to get to the Dyno and do a before and after in the next couple of weeks)but I can feel quite a difference.......and the tip in......oh boy.....thats makes it fun again for sure......tire spin at will.....lol.So I would say for the money, if you have a tuner that will work with you I would say it's a good piece........and if you have the patience to wait for the adaptives(which could take weeks) to learn this TB....it's a great deal.
Now for the stock 5.7 guys that have been asking.....I am going to bolt this on my 5.7 just to see what happens.......but judging from what I saw on my VERY NOT STOCK 6.1........I can pretty much guess that the 5.7 won't even want to start, and if it does road manners will be horrible.
All of these issues can be corrected with the proper tune of course but I would not consider this a direct bolt on and go.
I will update this thread over the next few weeks.

erik - great write up. i am still a bit leary on the advantage of a 90mm on a otherwise stock 6.1 set up such as mine. i can see the advantages for more modded cars with the need for more air, but i just do not see the need for guys with light mods like me. now, if i go with an i-charger in the future, then i might be singing a different tune....

btw, i guess i am not the only one ron does not pick up the phone for!!! dahahahahaha just kidding ron!!!

Erik, as noted your 6.1 is not very stock. You mentioned in particular that your intake had been opened up. How did this effect the adaptor? The adaptor is for the stock (not opened up) intake right? What other mods do you have in the intake area? And any way you could venture what the effect would be without them?

Well, maybe? Are the runners the same?

I'm also not clear on the openings (having never taken mine apart or really looked in there when putting on CAIs). Does the opening of the stock TB match the opening of the stock intake manifold? Assuming the stock TB is a restriction(?) and assuming the intake manifold opening is the same size, wouldn't the same restriction be there unless you also opened up your intake opening?

    Interested

I am interested to see your test results. Are you running that in place of the stock TB without ANY tuning? With all of the increased airflow aren't you concerned about the car running too lean?

Been watching the wideband........it actually ran fatter. And yes....I bolted it up in place of the stock TB with no tuning for the TB.

That's the big question. Is there increased airflow? First there is the restriction of the stock intake opening. Secondly the runners might not flow more than what's coming in now. Eric's intake is not exactly stock.

Haha, if Erik blows up then we'll know the TB works really well

(joke) Wouldn't wish that on Erik or anyone else and Erik of all people wouldn't miss that anyway.

Oh.....and you must have missed the part where I said I don't recommend it as a bolt on and go mod......to tell the truth I don't expect it to have much gain for a stock or mildly modded car.A good cam/head/longtube package with ported intake will see a benefit....so will the strokers. There is no gain at all if a 3.5" CAI is used in front of it.

the more i read this, the more i see this as being realistically useless for mild / stock cars........ maybe even more harm than good.
